Can this mod be done on our TLs?

I know I have seen many cars, i.e. Infiniti M35/M45, Chevy Corvette, Scion Tc. that have the "crazy speedometer" when you start the car. You know, the speedometer that goes from 0 to 160 and then back to 0 when you start the car. What the heck do you call this feature anyway? I used to think this was something that came this way from the factory but the other day I saw a 2003 Ford F150 that had this!?!?! So I am thinking that maybe there a module out there or something that can make our cars do this. I think it looks cool.

For those of you who still have no idea what I'm talking about, lol, check out vid below. It's the speedometer on an 09 Maxima. I guess the 09 Maximas has this now also.

maybe its purpose is to make sure your speedometer will mark the correct speed in case you decide to travel 140 mph on a given day...lol.

It's for the look I think. I remember when the STI's were the first ones to do this, it was like the coolest thing EVER...it's still pretty cool...lol

For looks only, IMHO.

Yeah, Subaru started doing this before everyone else and I know the IS250/350 will do it too. I'm sure it is just for looks.

It's called a needle sweep. My guess is it does that as part of a system test when you start the car.

I enjoy looking at it everytime i start the car.

From what the subaru tech said... it recalibrates the speedo for test purposes and so the needle works. Basically, everytime you do the sweep, it self checks so the rpm's don't get stuck, or the fuel gauge isnt stuck.....

very cool idea.

I think it's neato.. Subies are cool because at first just the needle lights up, does the full sweep, then everything else comes on

LOVE IT!

but no.. only way to do it in the TL is manually in the diag mode ;(

Looks as everyone else said. I'd be more interested if there was a way to make our cars so that when started, they actually give a nice rev, similar to a few exotics like the LP560-4.

Mine does that, you just have to touch the rev pedal.

I know Chevy had this on the C5 when it came out in 1997. My '99 C5 had it and yes, it was very cool. It swept the guages (tach to redline and speedo to 200). Also, the MID scrolled up..."Corvette by Chevrolet".

It calibrates the speedo? So all the other 99.9% of cars on the road that don't do this have incorrect speeds showing on their speedometers? lol... Completely useless feature.

haha no... it's more like a self check. Did you notice how the Subaru above had the 2 seperate gauges light up and sweep as well? Usually for cars with boost, the gauge can become very off, as it has happened to mine once already. I was reading 10psi on a 19psi tune.

cars nowaday's are so efficient that you really dont need to do that anymore, and it has turned into a " looks " thing, rather then actually serve as a function.

I would say it is a useless feature... looks cool for sure. If it came stock on my car, I'd be happy. If not, I wouldn't try and mod my car to make it happen. Kind of just a cool bonus if it has it, don't care if it doesn't type of thing.
