SOrry for posting without searching but is there a DIY on how to replace the oil pan on 04 TL. I need to replace mine because mine is leaking oil from the drain plug

Have you checked the thread inside? See if it's damaged. It could just be a bad gasket. Try replacing the gasket. There isn't much to changing oil pans. They usually bolt right off. Just be careful of the windage tray and sensor. I havn't looked at the TL too much, but sometimes there is a sensor outside. A 30k car should have it on the inside though.

 

Have you tried replacing the 5c washer first? It's a crush gasket.

I'd try several things to seal the plug before replacing the whole pan, particularly if the threads are still intact. Heck, I once used a garden hose rubber gasket to fix a leaky drain plug. That pan was dented BAD, though.

 

if the threads are semi stripped try one of those quikdrain plugs where you dont have to unscrew it to drain it. wrap it in teflon tape and then just leave it in

 

If you did not strip the threads I really think it is your drain plug washer which Honda recommends you replace every time you change your oil. I usually replace mine every other oil change. If you have a shop change your oil hopefully they remembered to use a new washer or even put the old one back on. I tested the longevity of the washer on my old Integra and it lasted 3 oil changes before it started to leak.

 

I put an EZ Drain on my oil pan to replace the plug. I just installed it on the last oil change so not sure how well it drains yet. But might be a solution for you:

like everyone else have said already, check the drain plug gasket first, if its ok then look at the threads, if you have to then put a oversized drain plug in. make the oil pan replacement your last thing on the list simply because its the most expensive and it will probably be the biggest pain in the bum to do at home.

our 3G oil pans dont have a rubber gasket, its honda bond and they are really hard to get off, most of the time i usually have to use a pry bar to get it off. and in some extreme situations a hammer with the pry bar.

 

Check the crush gasket as stated earlier. That solved the problem for me.

 

i already ordered my oil pan! it should get here Thursday! the tread was stripped, and i dnt wanna try and get it re-thread that can leave some pieces inside

I have a 2004 TL and just found out I need to replace the oil pan. The threads inside are stripped. I have tried a new oem plug & crush gasket etc. Its been confirmed the inner threads are stripped.

I have the new oem oil pan here and I am going to attempt to tackle installing it this weekend. Do I need another gasket for where the drain pan meets up with the upper?

Is it a pain to do this? How long do you think it will take? Is there anything I should be aware of? Or any advise?
Has anyone else done this before on an 04 TL?

I thought i would never have to bring this thread back to life but i guess never say never lol
The time for me to change the oil pan due to the threads being stripped to the point that the drain plug just spins. I did put in M14x1.5 oversized drain plug but it still leaks just a little bit.
Who have done it, what did u guys use to remove old hondabond left on the block? Also, did you completely remove the j-pipe or just remove it from the engine(front and back) and left it connected to the rest of the exhaust?

 

Just a few points for those who want to do this.
1- removing the j-pipe from the exhaust is helpful. I wish i did that, all i did was drop it from the front and rear primary cat converters and left it hanging.
2- test fit the oil pan before you put the hondabond and go under the car. The oil pan can clear the subframe in 2 different ways but only one way to be able to fully go in and be able to tighten the bolts.
3- i know it is only 8.7lbs for those oil pan bolts but i still used torque wrench. Also, use torque wrench for the j-pipe nuts- it is 40lbs
