like anything else u'll get all sorts of answers as far as brands and what is good and what isn't. most ppl agree that penzoil platinum is a great synthetic though. try looking around on bobistheoilguy.com if you are really interested.

An endless debate. Just go with something reputable and you'll be fine.

Mobil 1
Royal Purple
Pennzoil Platimum
Amisol

etc ....

Question

Quick question, if I change to synthetic today, exactly how many miles later do I change again?

When the MID tells you.

That's what I'll do. Two reasons:

1. Cost is the same. If I went to dealer/local shop I'd go when the MID says. It would cost ~$30 for non-synthetic.

If I DIY at the same intervals with Synthetic, it costs ~$30. BUT I should be getting better protection.

2. The Owner's Manual clearly says using Synthetic is not a problem. BUT it also says you are still expected to maintain the standard (i.e. MID) Oil Change Intervals.

Now, I don't believe that is actually necessary, but if I have a warranty issue, the Oil Change Interval is the LAST thing I want to have to argue about.

Mobil 1 full-synthetic 5w-30 Extended Performance good for 15k miles (I change it at 6-8K regardless.) Got 5qts + M1 Filter on sale for $27! Can't beat that!

I just switched from Mobil1 to Royal Purple. Lab tests are better for RP.

Anything that meets Honda specs is just fine....I use Mobil-1 because some of my other cars with longer change intervals recommend it. Its easier for me to just go with one oil & not have a bunch of leftover part quarts laying around.

I still get free oil changes from the dealer where I bought my TL, so I use whatever they're putting in there.

Personally, I don't like Pennsoil since they acquired Slick-50 (or duralube, I can't remember which). Any company that sells a product that is detrimental to your engine, and claims it as good, is bad in my book. But that's another thread....

I'm thinking of switching to Royal Purple in the future. I have read about the possible power gains etc. Is it for real? Anyone have a real-world experience they could tell me about. Does the engine run significantly smoother? Is the XPR oil recommended or should we stick to the regular synthetic?

Since we are talking about oil changes, does anyone have a opinion on what the best oil filter is.

Pennzoil Platinum & Purolator PureONE oil filter.

If you have a Pep Boys in your area, 5 quarts of oil and the filter for $17.99 (after rebate).

Best is a interesting word, expect you will get a hundred variation's just like oil gas & tires. I use the Mobil M1-104. Its sized for the S2000 but fits the TL with no problems. Its a little bigger then the stock TL size

I used AMSOil in the TL, didn't notice a huge dif, but it was a tiny bit smoother. switched to royal purple in my previous car and notcied a HUGE difference! I like them both, I don't think you can go wrong.

Mobil 1 and purolator pureone are good with the pureone being cheaper but very close in quality. not necessary to upgrade filters if your not using an extended interval for synthetic. your regular honda or off the shelf filter will work just fine for a 3k-5k change synthetic or not.

It depends on how you drive. If, when you enter you cockpit, you feel furry, your start to grow fangs, and you begin to snarl, maybe 5K. If, when you get behind the wheel, and you put your latte in the cup holder, may longer. Or just reset the oil counter and watch it.

I'd rathre use a quality filter for short intervals, than a crap filter for short changes. Fram is an off the shelf filter, but I wouldn't trust that thing even if I changed my oil every 500 miles. Your oil changes are only as good as the weakest link... Why use good oil if you use a crap filter? If you use a crap filtre, you may as well use crap oil too.

Royal Purple is the real deal. Used it, loved it! but don't take just my word for it seach various Mags. for improved gains. All indepenent test on diffrent vehicles, with Hp gains. For example May 08 DC sport Mag. added 36 whp on the new EVO using K&N air/oil filter, Royal Purple, and exhaust upgrade. They all added a decent amount of HP at the wheels!

You really think motor oil contributed any measurable HP to this car?

Oil would only restore lost HP from the previously dirty, worn out oil.

I'm currently using the Amsoil oil filter as well (guaranteed for 25k) I just can't see myself going that long with an oil and filter so at 10k it wil be changed and the oil sent out for an analysis.

How does dirty oil reduce horsepower?
