Battery Service from Dealer - necessary?
Just a small question for all you gurus. It's rolled around time for me to do my 75k service. In all honesty, the only thing I saw necessary on the list of to-dos were the following: battery service and coolant type 2 flush. now, my question for you: is the battery service really needed? it's supposedly supposed to be some sort of anti-corrosive protective solution, wrapped in something to...help the battery "flow" better? can't recall his exact words, obviously as you can tell lol. yay or nay? it's like...a 100 bucks, or was it 80? what about the freaking coolant type 2 flush?
Thanks,
Eric

Coolant flush is nice. I dunno about the battery service. My assumption is that they test the voltage on the battery (load test etc), check for leaks, and make sure the terminals are not corroded. But thats my assumption. Usually you can do that with a DVOM and some creativity at home. The dealers might be more intensive it doesnt hurt to ask the service writer what they do.

If it were me, I would buy a new battery (check Consumer Reports for their top rated model in the size category) and a can of battery terminal anti-corrosive. When you install the battery, clean the terminals on the cables on your car with a battery terminal cleaner (a specially designed wire brush available at Sears or any auto parts store) and coat them with the anti-corrosive spray. You will be set for another 5 years and be money ahead in the long run.
Paying a dealer that much for "battery service" is foolish IMO. You can also do the coolant flush yourself. Just use Acura coolant and distilled water when you re-fill it.

acura coolant comes premixed- do not add distilled water to it
Batteries get distilled water when needed
You can clean the terminals and post with baking soda and a wire brush, use the $1 green and red felt pads, spray with battery protector or vaseline works too,
put on the outside of the cable end to prevent the white crud buildup

If you diy coolant- make sure to drain the engine block too-
gets all the old stuff out
Coolants special additives turn acidic over time so an early flush never hurts= will protect the water pump and radiator

Clean your own battery and stick to the coolant flush

Is the general life of a gen3 battery coming in at 3-4 years?
or 4 days past warranty limit~
Gen2 was getting 4 year average, and gen3 has more cowling and hotter under the hood
Made me wonder...
