Automatic Z (Stock) vs Automatic TL (Stock)

Just got to race a Automatic z (driver only) from a light w/ a passenger (150lbs) and some other crap in my car. VSA off. In D, not sport-shift. Well, from a dig I won. I had him at my rear quarter panel. Either I launched faster or I just saw the light first, something. Idk. Then he sorta' just reeled me in. I stopped at about 55-60 and he just flew by. When I began to break he was slowly catching up, and then flew by me. I didn't want to risk going any faster with a passenger in my car. My own stupidity is my problem, if anything were to happen (God forbid), I don't want to take anyone else down with me. Maybe next time, without a passenger, I'll get a different outcome.

Anyways, would it have been better for me to drive in SS? I used to only drive in SS, but recently I read somewhere and heard from a friend and fellow 3g aziner that D is better/faster.

EDIT:
Should've mentioned that all my tires are balding if not already. lol

Good kill but I think you were just lucky enough to hit the gas first otherwise he would have won right away.

There are a number of things that were against you.

1) 3rd gens can't be gate shifted . . as I understand it. In 2nd gens D5 is the slowest option, followed by SS and then the best is gate shifting. Not sure what's best for 3rd gens.

2) extra weight is a killer for lower torque motors . . and ours don't have much.

3) as tire wear gets down to the wear bar, traction gets worse . .

1) But, does this apply to 3rd gens? I read somewhere on here that putting the car in D with the VSA off achieves the best 1/4 mile times..? I could definitely be misinformed though. lol

2) I feel you on that one. I hope the future mods will help me out with the TQ factor.

3) I agree. Nothing to be said here.

man...those Z's BUG me. so many Z drivers seem to think their car is the fastest in the world. in all honesty, i don't see what the hype's all about. stock for stock, you'd take him again and again. back in the day, when i BELIEVE i was only i/e, i raced a (seemingly) stock 6mt Z from a dig, and beat HER (<-- maybe why I won? lol) by a car's length.

I feel you dude. At times I really want a G/Z but at other times I realize that I can be just as fast AND have 2 back seats. lol

Don't trip though. Revenge is gonna' be sweet when I get it.

Good kill BTW.

i don't think you should use SS. There's a bunch of lag when you use SS so I always use D. I understand where you would feel SS is the better option as you have more control over the gears but just stomping on it is the quicker alternative.

It's going to take thousands in mods to hang with a stock 1st gen auto Z. A stock auto Z will run 13.8-14.2s. A stock 5AT TL will do upper 14s/lower 15s. Sorry, but that's huge. You might beat the driver, but you're not going to a good driver in a stock Z unless you've got a blower on that 5AT.

Yeah, that's how I feel about the situation now. Shoulda' got a manual lol. Or just got a G coupe and called it a day.

It's whatever man. At this point, I'm considering selling the TL anyway to pick up a G.

Yea, you beat the driver not the Z as the Z will easily take a TL.

sorry guy . . no disrespect, but with my current mods I've owned the Zs. My only loss came when I was totally stock.

Yeah, I'm back and forth with getting one but the reality is that I probably will have to keep my TL for at least a few more years. haha I really need to star modding it though.

Yeah, a bit of luck I'm sure, but a bit of experience as well. Unfortunately, I didn't listen to my own experience with FWD and go with a RWD like a G coupe . . . . I still like their looks and I think the G coupes especially will hold their looks over time. Oh well . . . I'm not too old to hope for something new in a RWD.

Best wishes on what ever you end up with.

Good luck with that Ruf! I hope to either mod my TL up the ass so it actually performs like it should or upgrade to a G coupe by the summer.

Here is the info I found on his profile below. If this is still accurate, sorry that will not beat any year 350z period, especially a 07+ as those are low to mid 13 sec cars with traps near 107-108 mph.

Per his profile:

02 WDP TLS Black Interior w/ Black Grill Inserts
**1/4mile 14.46 @96.07MPH (pre headers, CAT & Mounts)
17x7 Konig Appeals SMF
P225/45ZR-17 Bridgestone RE960 AS
(used Ziex 512s track only)
CT Icebox, Sways & Springs
Innovative Mounts
Mugen Cooling Mods & Thermoblok
XS Headers - Ceramic Coated & Random-Tech CAT
NEO Anti Freeze & 5w-20 oil
Pending:
BBTB; Ram-Air
UR Pullies
Diamond Slotted Rotors
Tokico Adj Struts

As far as the 02 TL-S is concerned it is faster than a 04-08 TL Base stock vs stock. the 02-03 TL-S really benefit from headers where as the 04-08 Base TL doesn't have that luxury. With that said, a 02-03 TL-S with I/H/E and Pullies can easily run low 14's with traps in the very low 100's. That will keep up with the Auto Z pre- HR. Just my Opinion!

I beat an 6mt 350Z with my TL from a 2nd gear pull on winters. Im sure if it was an automatic I would've pulled harder.

I remember his car now. If he's running 14.4s, then I could see him taking out an unsuspecting 1st gen 03-06 350Z owner. If he now has headers, his chances improve a bit.

A 1st gen 350z runs 13.8-14.2 normally at 101-103 mph. The trap speed is where it's at and the 350z is just faster.

youre assuming every z owner runs the car and driver specs.

i have yet to see anyone with a stock Z break 14 seconds at my 2 tracks.. i've seen fast Z's.. but never a fast stock time... 14.0-14.5 is what i see..

having said that.. a good driver in the TL can handle that time just fine

^^ what are you talking about.. you just "verified" my post.
(i never discredited the capabilities of the Z)

your giving the Z credit for (Great Drivers) in assuming the TL will not hold its own against it.

the person he raced or most of us will see on the street.. will not drive a sub 14 second 1/4 mile.

most will be on par with the last 10 drivers of the list, reguardless of what the car CAN do. THAT is fact.

well, I guess you should be sorry . . I've run 4 guys with 350z and lost to the first one when I was stock and he had some basic mods. This is real world where we're not racing some trade rags results or some 350z best times with drag radials. I have yet to see a stock 350z run low 13s around the tracks around here. 90 percent plus of all drivers will run slower than the top posted results. What this means is that about 90% of the 350z I'll encounter on the street will loose because of the driver. That said, none of the races were from a dig where the RWD has the advantage, but then driver skill still comes in to play. I've run a number of cars that are or should be 'technically' faster, but all that means nothing in the real world with average drivers. Don't forget, I've already run some pretty fast cars like the 550i and won 5 out of 5 runs with him. And I think a 550i is about as fast or even faster than a 350z. And I've run neck and neck with a friend's Jeep SRT8which I believe are faster than a 350z. It's possible that my track times are slow because of traction problems . . so with all my current mods and improved traction I should be running 13s.

Oh, here is my updated sig.

LOL!!

I didn't read your post before just posting myself. We are on the same page. I've actually pulled 2 of the 350s in the midrange, so that's a pretty good indication that from a car's power perspective was mine giving his the business. That said, most drivers won't get the most out of their car's capabilities. That's why I've always said and stand by my point than any car within 1/2 second difference is a driver race for the average person . . in my case I feel I have a chance at beating most anyone with a car that's up to 1 second faster. This may all sound arrogant, but I have backed up that claim over and over in my 33+ years of racing.

Oh well, we'll never convince everyone of these facts and all that really matters is that it's fun to race and beat faster cars . . and it's even more fun modding a car like ours and get them run with bigger dogs.

BTW, here's a link from Drag times . . . based on these posted results 96 of the posted results are faster than my current corrected times. And based on my best guess, 75 of them are faster than mine, possibly as few as 60. Of the remaining 60, how many of those are heavily modded? About 50%, so if I added NOS or other boost I could possibly getting in to the low 12s which would put me in the top 20. Okay, what's my point here? You can't just look at what one person says or what a trade rag result produces. Results vary from car to car, person to person . . so it just gives you a good idea of what one car is capable of, but as the old saying goes . . . mileage may vary.

Okay, we've about beaten this one to death, but one this data draws me to some other points as to why a TL could take a Z at the track, and even more possible on the street.

1) 42 of the 47 are manual trannys . . and getting a manual to reproduce top results is much harder to do and as a result a larger percentage of the results will be lower. With my TLS I produced 10 runs from 14.462 to 14.621 - 0.159 secs . . much more consistency. And my best 5 runs were within 0.08 secs.

2) The range between #1 and #47 is 2.404 SECONDS . again

3) 0-60' times are better because of RWD, but that's not as much of an advantage on the street as it is at the track.

Anyway, hope we meet up sometime for one of the Texas meets so we can have a little fun.

I'm not gonna' lie, I'm fairly confident that once I get new tires and take some of the crap out of my car I'll be able to mess with some Z's/G's. Then with a j-pipe, intake, exhaust, and pully, I should be able to keep up with the "big dogs". Like Ruf said, it's all in the driver and "mileage may vary". hahaha

Car for car, mod for mod, the Z is simply going to be quicker and faster. It makes more power, weighs a lot less, and has a shorter wheel base which is allows it to obtain mid to high 1.9 60 foots with ease. As it's been already pointed out, the driver makes all the difference and most Z drivers suck, but the same can be said for most TL drivers.
