Opinions on TL-S?

Hey guys,

I'm new here and wanting to buy an 07 or 08 TL-S. What do you guys think is a reasonable price for one with around 40 or 50k miles on it?

Also, do you guys think it's worth it to pay the extra for the Type S compared to a regular TL? What are the differences between the two?

Thanks a lot, any help/opinions are appreciated.

There's a thread going on about this today...
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/who-got-best-%24%24-deal-their-tl-purchase-761264/

I traded in a base 05 TL for the Type-S. There are many differences: suspension, engine is a 3.5 not a 3.2 like the base, seats are different leather/color, wheels, standard tires, front lights, rear lights, Brembo brakes, navi is standard, paddle shifters are standard...its worth it. Price depends on color, condition & MT/AT. For that amount of miles I'd say you should be around the mid 20k price range. I got mine with 4,500 miles on it for $29k in October 2008. Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for the reply!

Ya, I was just looking at that thread but that's more based on who paid what for what, which is I guess somewhat what I was wondering.

Also, MT are usually cheaper than AT for most cars right? But is this different for the TL-S? It seems like the MT are harder to find for the TL-S, so would this push the price up more?

i'm not sure whether one can argue that MT is cheaper than AT. there is more demand for AT because most people don't drive MT; or prefer AT. back in 07 acura had both cars listed for the same price.

I see, I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to test drive and check one out.

It's an 07 TL-S 'Nighthawk Black' with Ebony/Silver interior, 6SPD MT, 17k miles on it, for $27k. Seems a bit pricey right now but maybe the dealership will budge?

What do you guys think about the price and such?

i seen a 08 TL-S on ebay for about 25k or best offer, with about 20 k miles ,i think you can get better than 27.5 k since the 4g came out, they should really lower the 3g's price

That seems reasonable, assuming the car is in mint condition. When I was looking at TL-S's in October, most were going for $28k - $32k depending on year, condition, and mileage.

That would be awesome. I'm glad you mentioned that because I may be able to use that for some leverage in getting them to lower the price. Hopefully, they'll find it reasonable to do so. How hard is it usually to get dealerships to budge on prices?

That wont work lol. They will then claim no one likes the 4G and thats why the 3G S's are holding their value so well. That price you mentioned sounds like a pretty good deal if its in excellent (no damage history) condition. No real difference in price between the 6MT and 5AT but keep in mind most TL owners do not want manual so consider when you go to sell it having stick is gonna be much harder to sell.

Hope this helps,
James

Why do they not want it stick usually?

Because the average TL owner does not want to have to shift a car to drive it. Kind of the same concept as why a 65 year old man in a Buick wants automatic. Not saying the TL is like an old man car but its generally for the same reason I mentioned above that most TL drives want automatic.

I would test drive the base TL first then do the Type-S. The feel, features and sound are totally different. If you dont need navi & dont care about the extra stuff then get the base. Arrogantbastard was right on the price ranges, what I always do is get them to what they think is their lowest price they can give you then walk out & come back later or the next day. They usually call back & say "was talking to my sales manager & I think we can..." Dont let them know how much u love the car or they got you, say you're shopping around. I did this and got them down from the low 30s to 29k...but I woulda probly signed for whatever I wanted the Type-S so bad. lol.

Well, even if you do want all those options, most of them you can find on a base. I have a 6MT, so i have the Brembo's, and mine came with navi. Most of the differences between my base, and the Type S are cosmetic. Aside from the obvious 3.5 L vs my 3.2 and just a few others. And as far as a manual being harder to sell. I think it'd be easier to sell, considering they're fairly rare cars.

I dont think you can get the two toned seats on a base (plus the leather is different), paddle shifters, Type-S rims, Brembos or headlights/tail lights...unless of course you do all that after. The engine & different exhaust was enough for me to get it...the extras were just added bonuses.

Im a salesman at a Honda dealership in Elmhurst... Typically most dealers will not move much on their internet pricing... Chances are the price that is on the window is much higher then the price listed online... I paid 32000 for my 08 type s in october of 2008... Make sure you buy certified and make sure you ask the dealer what kind of work they have done to the car in service... and make sure the carfax is clean... We have an 08 base with navi 13k miles for $27,000... look online see what theyre going for and chances are the one that looks like the best deal probably is...

ytn65 -- do you think it's worth the extra money to go the Certified Pre-Owned route if one is looking to buy a low-mileage '08? Since the low-mileage '08's are still under the manufacturer's warranty, is the CPO actually worth the difference in price? I know that the dealership does the inspection on the CPO and replaces what needs to be replaced, but it would seem that you could get just as good a deal (if not better) by buying a low-mileage non-CPO and extending the factory warranty. Admittedly, the 100k warranty is nice, especially if it is on a low-mileage '08.

I'd have to agree with the majority on this one -- if the money is the same, it would seem that the Type-S is a no-brainer. Sure, there are exceptions (I sure as hell would not want a 6MT in San Fran, let's say), but there really is nothing better than shifting it yourself.

Yay, I'm going in later today... for the test drive and such. So 17k miles at about $27k right now, hopefully can get it down to around $25k :/. That would be a nice buy I think for 25k.

certification is HUGE!! that warranty is good at any acura dealership in the country... I would pay up to a 1000$ more for a certified one... if you can get a non certified for lets say 2000 less then i guess it would make sense... just make sure its never been whacked before...

Yeah, the certification is big, and honestly, on '08's under 36k in miles, I'm not sure there is a huge difference in price between CPO and non-CPO.

I'm getting ready to buy one, but will be on the road with it a fair amount -- at least 25k miles a year, so I'll need the 100k warranty.

It was a lease return. The dude at the dealership didn't mention a price... so we just talked about it. It had a lot of curb rashes on the rims. I'm going back tomorrow to talk about it some more.

The tl-s is nice but lets be honest, do you actually use the paddle shifters? I mean, its not a ferrari. Im not coming after you, but most of the options on cars are just for saying wow I have this or that. I do not use half the features on my car as it is. The back up camera is nice but I added one on my car for 250 and it enabled me to put video on my nav screen. And yes, brembo's are standard on all 6mt base models. As for wheels, everyone with a base wants them, but everyone with a type s wants to sell them to make money and get aftermarket rims. That may not be your case, but its a very common thing. There's a lot of nice aesthetic options on the type s, but nothing that can be put on a base. Either or, you will not be dissatisfied with an ACURA.

So I was checking cars.com again looking at the TL Type S again, and all the prices seemed to drop a lot. Did the prices get cheaper?

A lot of TL-Ss are coming off lease right about now, so there are more on the market, hence lower prices. But I guarantee you these will get scooped up quickly, so I wouldn't dilly dally!

For the mileage you are asking about you should be in the lower 20k range.

I bought an 08 type S with 35k miles for 24.9k back in december. Clean carfax and the works. That was the online price and they wouldn't budge. They actually had the best price on one I could find here in houston, so I scooped it up. The base is ok, but if you drive both, you'll be hooked on the type S!!

Dam, that sounds like a great deal.

Any major differences on the 07 and 08?
