Automatic Tranny

Well, just dropped of my TL, getting my transmission replaced. They're installing a remanufactured transmission (they think something inside was damaging the seal). I had the seal between the torque converter and the transmission replace a few weeks ago but the leak came back. When I saw the service manager he mistook me for another customer who was also coming in today for a new/remanufactured transmission. He told me we're not the first ones with the leaking problem...there has been several others in the last few weeks. This was also collaborated by the rental car driver who picks you up at Acura and takes you to your rental car. He also told me there has been a lot of 04 TL owners getting new transmissions. Now I'm not one to spread rumors, but I think Acura has another tranny problem. My suggestion to everyone is, get your car up on a lift and check for a transmission leak. Mine was slow enough...there was never a puddle under the car. I have apprx. 10,500 miles on the car. The rental car driver also told me of one TL owner he's picked up several times...each time it was for a new transmission (3rd one)...they're not cheap apprx. 4K

I'm personally on my fifth 2004 TL transmission.... I replace them on my own dime at each 2500 mile interval. I figure in this way, I'll NEVER feel a slipping gear, or see leaking fluid for the ownership of the vehicle.

Guys, if you look at his posts, he ain't the troll/TL hater. Neither is he the first ever to have tranny replacement (maybe the first 5AT). Tons of members/newbies here come to ask questions or vent their dissatisfaction once they're bothered by issues/problems.

3G TL has a long way to go, let's hope the whole car stay perfect as long as possible.

Here is what I find so odd...

There are people on here that complain about Acura trannies, both in the 2G and 3G forums. Some poeple mention that they are on their fifth or sixth transmission.

Now, I am willing to accept (and I expect) that a FEW transmissions will go bad. What I don't understand is how some people go hundreds of thousands of miles on ONE transmission and some people can't seem to make it ten thousand miles on one tranny.

Sounds pretty fishy to me...perhaps there is a little abuse going on...

Just my two cents...

The fifth was referring to some of the guys with 2nd gen TLs and any 3rd gens. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Although it seems there is someone on here that may be on their second tranny in an 04.

A HUGE reason that I didn't get an 04 TL was that I wanted to see if the auto tranny would last. I really really hope that this is a fluke. The 2nd Gen TL trannies are total crap. I can't believe Honda would design something like that.

As an ex-Gen II owner, there were people on the board that absolutely refused to acknowledge that a problem existed in spite of the random and alarming rate of failures. Acura was forced to acknowledge the problem - do a search. There's no question that the CL/Gen II TL transmissions had a design flaw. The new debate has moved on to whether or not the Gen III's are affected.

Yield,

Good to hear from you again. Here's the details:

My TL-S was worth 18,900 (or around there) w/ 38K miles on it (bought it for $34K OTD in '01).

A new TL w/o Navi was 34,000 OTD (they weren't budging from MSRP at the time).

The spread, therefore, was about $15,000.00, and initially, Acura wanted me to pay them $11,000 to get into the new TL. I told them to go screw themselves and I kept fighting.

Finally, we got to $5000.00 to get me out of my TL-S, and into a new one. We never made it to arbitration court, however, for the three other members I've helped since on their BBB cases, they all went to arbitration court, and received FULL buybacks, with TAX, TITLE, AND REGISTRATION. You should get all this money back, and if you go to arbitration court, I have heard that Acura reps put up a pitiful defense for their company, and that it is very easy to illustrate the hardships you endured thru the whole ordeal, and you can make a clear case easily for how the safety of the vehicle was severely jeopardized due to the defective transmission.

Email me for any more details, we've helped three others get full buybacks, I'm happy to help you as well, I want nothing more than more good people such as yourself get revenge against a car company that looked the other way with such a serious issue.

Abuse has nothing to do with it. I didn't abuse my first two trannies, and they both failed. One of these failed in the dealership parking lot after they just installed it. What does that have to do w/ abuse.

A friend of mine has a CL-S that he's tracked at the dragstrip at least 100 passes... he has 68K miles on the ODO -- PROBLEM FREE.. and it's an '01. Somewhere, there was a manufacturing flaw .. there had to have been, in addition to an already poorly designed tranny. Therefore, my theory is that a variety of transmission that failed had the misfortunte of encountering that design flaw in addition to dealing with an already paltry design plateform.

Abuse of the tranny does not contribute to failures. My last one only lasted 6k miles on my TLS and my wife drove it 90% of the time.

Torque + Honda Tranny = bad idea

I'm personally on my fifth 2004 TL transmission.... I replace them on my own dime at each 2500 mile interval. I figure in this way, I'll NEVER feel a slipping gear, or see leaking fluid for the ownership of the vehicle.
Replace them on yor own dime at each 2500 mile interval? WTF?

Are you sure you don't mean the fluid?

Unfortunately, I started noticing a problem with the transmission in the past week or so on my late '04 5AT. Seems like it is slipping when trying to go from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. Definitley seems odd since the car has been shifting so well up until this point. I have about 8,000 miles on the car, and got my A1 service done at around 6,200. I'm going to monitor it closely, and probably take it to the dealer soon. I'm hoping it's not a major problem.

I wonder if our transmissions are suceptible to that recall that was performed on the earlier 04 TLs. Even though Acura hasn't announced it yet, it could happen! They expanded that recall several times before its current state.

Good point. This is the same transmission as the previous generation with the oil jet kit on it. It's been working great so far. I'm really hoping that at worst I would have to get my transmission fluid replaced or something like that.

I'll try to give an update. Also trust me, out of all people I'm not trying to start a transmission craze here, but was just concerned with the performance in the past week or so.

When the dealer replaced my throttle body a few weeks ago, they said that my transmission fluid was also low. Did you check yours to see if you have ample fluid?

Low from the factory, possibly. I never bothered checking and apparenly the dealership never bothered to check in all the times I've taken the car in. I had 13,000 miles.

No I haven't, I'm going to do that after work. When I got the A1 service done about a month or so ago, they didn't mention anything bout the transmission fluid level being low.

Considering I had three dealers work on my steering wheel vibration problem and NONE of the dealers (except the one who fixed the problem) bothered to check that if my fluids were low, the fact that your dealership didn't report anything does not surprise me. They _might_ have checked it, but I would definitely do a double-check.

You know what's funny is that I have a friend who is an ex Honda powertrain research guy. He helped design the fuel economy/emmissions setup for the J32's and said, and I quote:
"Yeah, the J32's are unbelievably solid, however, there are definitely some problems with the 2G auto box. It was not uncommon for us to blow up one or two a day on the dyno."

PeterUbers, my mom is on her 3rd tranny with 30k on the clock. She really likes the looks of the 04 so we are just biding our time until the next one goes...at which point we are going to make them buy the car back. Its a real shame as well, the car has been flawless other than that.

i'm probably one of the few with the highest miles with 04 TL here. i'm nearing 29,000 miles and no tranny issue. my next visit though, i was told they will replace the liquids. i've always thought the tranny issue was common with the 6MT?

w1n78,
A slightly off topic question for you. What tires do you have and how are they holding up at 29,000 miles.
