Anybody thought of converting to Eco Green?

For the past year or so, I've always wanted to convert my TL into more Ecological Auto, such as an Electric Car/Battery Operated. Just thought it be interesting topic to talk about it, if any of you Ziners have any thoughts on it.

Thanks

Advantages of the Electric Car
* You can completely eliminate your gas bills and save thousands of dollars every year.

* You will pay less on maintenance costs.

* You can drive up to 150-200 miles on a single charge.

* You can reduce emissions and greenhouse gases.

* You can receive tax credits from the IRS for driving a clean fuel vehicle.

* No more oil changes, or tuneups, or emissions tests.

* You will only need about 1 dollar to charge your automobile.

* You can start enjoying a smoother ride.

Also, you can make your car Extremely FAST!!!

But for how much? I've seen the fast electric cars in documentaries but they were outrageously expensive.

And for what it would cost to convert the TL to electric, you could probably afford one

First of all, thats obviously not true. Energy isnt that cheap.

Second, you're just using electricity from another fossil fuel source. So the environmental aspect is negated.

Third, batteries usually have a sizable amount of nickel in them, a metal that has to be smelted. Its then transported by ships overseas that have zero pollution regulations and often pollute far more than hundreds of thousands of cars. These batteries especially if made in China go through toxic industrial processes that are rarely cleaned up.

My point being, your car is already a very clean and eco friendly vehicle in the grand scheme of things. Don't fool yourself into having a good conscience with this whole battery scam.

Short of all our electricity coming exclusively from wind, wave, geothermal, solar and fusion power you're going to be polluting.

Are cars are already ULEV

I don't think Electric cars are even on the market yet, sure they have those hybrids but i will stick with 100% gas cars until they phase them out (hopefully i will be dead by then)

There are plenty of other ways to save the environment instead of giving up our cars. Plant a friggin tree, recycle paper and plastics, carpool list goes on, i just don't see the rush in sacrificing the thing i love..driving.

Check out Tesla Motors. They offer an all EV. There are quite a few concepts out as well that will be on the market for 2010-2011.

You may want to research some of the new technologies for EVs.

Depending on where you live, electricity is that cheap, and it can be green as well. I live in an area that is mainly hydro with some nuclear. The only problem is, Tesla does not have a dealership any where within 1800 miles.

Most EVs will be using Lithium based batteries rather than NiMH batteries. They are opening several of these plants in the US.

As for the point of the TL being ECO friendly, this is true, BUT, you are still reliant upon gas. Which is coming from a country that more then likely harbors or supports terrorist or groups that do not care much for the US.

So the big question is why are so many people against going to something other then petrol (crude oil)?

A recent article stated that for the US to be able to sustain renewable fuels, cars would need to get 150 MPG equivalent. So to me, it makes sense that a car using a bio diesel generator and a Lithium battery pack built in the US would be able to achieve this goal. Look at the current rating they are giving to the Chevrolet Volt.

And for those that think the power is to be had with ICE (internal combustion engine) designs, check out the Tesla Roadster. There is plenty of performance to be had from an all electric car, instant torque is a wonderful thing.
