Another EL-42 Tire Update

Still no word from Acura.

Tires are "somewhere between Bridgestone and dealers."

And they're EL-42's.

great.

As far as I'm concerned, the EL-42s can STAY "somewhere between Bridgestone and dealers".

Traded in my EL42s for $300 to Discount Tire and bought Goodyear Eagle F1 DS-G3 summer performance tires (top rated tires on Tire Rack). Cost me $327. I don't yet have them installed (Blizzaks for winter), but looking forward to it.

In the past, I'd fight a manufacturer on this after spending $35k. I'm glad I realized that my time is worth much more than $327.

I'll bet that the few people who have gotten replacement tires spent a lot of time (more than they'll admit) getting frustrated with Acura before they got satisfied.

I completely agree with Sparky. I traded mine in to discount tire and got the Micheline Pilot Sport A/S.

Much, Much better. No hassle. $250 credit, Pilots are expensive so it ended up costing me $550 but that's totally better than getting "replacement Bridgestones" and spending time and energy to do so!

i won't get a credit with 5000 miles - so I'm waiting for the new ones to then trade in. Immediately.

Note I didn't want to spend money improving a *leased* car, since I have to buy tires at the end of lease. If I had a house I may consider storing the EL-42's, but I don't have the space.

I've wondered about the trade-in thing... Trouble is, I've wondered for almost a month, and I now have a little over 1100 miles on 'em! :smackhead: No vibration so far, though, so I think I'll just put lots of miles on the Turanzas until next winter, and THEN get me a new set of Michelin Pilot Sports.

Does anyone know if Discount Tire has any stores in the Philly (or even NY/NJ) area? I looked at their website, and it looks like there's nothing closer than Ohio. Or are there other places that will take old tires as trade-ins?

Many ppl thirst for this thing, "No Vibration"... good for you.

I kind of give up what Acura could do for me with another EL42s, and may just have the new tires before 05 winter.

I am on a four year lease and expect that I will need to buy new tires near the end of the lease. I think I will run the EL42s until the late fall and put on the Michelin Pilots then. I really don't want to run the EL42s in the winter given what I have read about them in the snow. I will keep the EL42s and put them on when I trade the car. If I am going to pay for a new set of tires anyway, I may as well do it now, spend a few extra bucks to get better tires than I can enjoy and return the car with the EL42s.

My only concern is that I might have to put the EL42s on for the last winter if the Pilots wear out before that. I figure that by running the EL42s for one summer I can avoid that problem.

I live in a condo but a buddy of mine is prepared to store the tires at his farm.

I traded mine in to the dealer BEFORE I even had a car for 400 credit and out of pocket of 458 for the pilot sports. to this point I am happy with them. they were implying at the time that acura would make the pilot sports oem so I guess I got lucky. wondering now if I should go with the bridgestone re 750s that are rated so highly in 18s with the chromes I am considering. even in the user reviews on tirerack.com some mention flat spotting when cold and blame the nylon center belt. I intend to use them only between april and november.

OK, I blew out one of the EL 42s on a pothole Thursday and I said no way to a$ $250 EL 42 to replace it. I ordered Faulkens after reading Cons reports from discounttires. They came to my house in 23 hours (Dallas to Tulsa) for $396 total. I put them on immediately, tech screwed up on alloy but I will tell you all the bs EL 42s are the problem. I am excited about an $89 tire! It is quiet and no harsh EL 42 stuff going on. Check out discounttiresdirect and quit worrrying about this. For $396 end you pain. It took a blow out to end mine. Thank goodness.
End of story

Has anyone had the new el42s put on their TL? If so, any noticeable difference? I am scheduled to get them Thurs but I'm considering trying to swap out and pay the difference. I'd have to take the tires somewhere else and do this on my own. . . . . Help!

If you have not gotten your car yet, there is a good chance it will have the new tires. I haven't seen any info on determining whether the tires are the new design or not, but you can check the build date on the tire. This is a code with the week and year (4803 is 48th week of 2003).

It is strictly up to the dealer whether he will let you swap and pay any difference in price, so you will have to wait and see. If you get the new tires, problem solved, if not, negotiate.

Crap@$$ Acura of Athens drove mine, detected the vibration due to flatspotting but said it wasn't excessive and refused to do anything. This was after they told me simply to turn the stereo down and it cures the reardeck rattling. Boy this is gunna be a fun letter.

Notice to prospective buyers:

If you are picky about your tires, and your new TL comes with the EL42's (likely), then I'd recommend making a trade-in deal with a local tire shop or your car dealer to upgrade the tires.

My EL42's (vin 315XX) are vibrating when cold (50 degrees F) for the first 5-10 miles at the 55-60 mph range, and then smooth out as they warm up. In my opinion they're not very sticky in cornering, and are reportedly crappy in the rain (I haven't experienced this).

Do yourself a favor - make a deal to trade at purchase, before driving on them and ruining their trade value.
