Everyone always says the old style was better...until they get used to the new one

It was in the announcement for several days at the top of every forum on the site that PMs would be deleted this weekend. You have the ability to download PMs, do it regularly if things you need are in there. Also, please pay attention to site announcements, as they are generally made for very good reason!

There are of course some things that need to be finished, but after a weekend of no sleep, and working thru the night last night, and until now tonight, really needs to get some sleep.

We will leave this thread open for comments for a little while, but once it's closed, we ask you to you the Off-Topic section for further discussions that aren't about the 3G TL.

and Welcome back everyone!

there was an announcement and stickies posted for several months warning of the upcoming PM merge.

you were instructed as to how to easily back them up...

this is why people should read our announcements more often.

I don't want to sound ignorant, but what was wrong with the old style? The previous theme of black, silver, white, blue matched Acura better imo. This earthy gold looks like it should be for Lexus. Also, the old site looked very modern yet it was highly functional, like what the TL is.

Where is the Car & Bikes section?

EDIT: nm, I found the C&B section, it's in Car Talk.

Well, I think all of us were more comfortable with the old format, but I think we will quickly acclamate to this one. However, the old one was more colorful with the green and red boxes, but the rep point thing really didn't serve any useful purpose. On with the new!

Just noticed we are able to delete our own post which is cool. I hope that stays because I hated it when I would accidentally post something twice. It was like saying “hey look at me I am stupid and posted this twice.”

Will the option of being able to post pics come back so we don't have to use links? That was one thing that I didn’t like about the old format. If some one wanted to post pic of a problem with their TL it would take like a day or two just to get the pic up.

Don’t like the colors to much but oh well. I didn’t like the last format changed but in the long run I ended up liking it. I am sure the same will happen here.

Once again I just want to thank everyone who make this site possible. I appreciate all the hard work that you guys put into it. My TL thanks you too.

Change always takes an adjustment. I don't believe in griping given that there is no charge to use to use this site! ("Griping"=bad; "suggestions"=good, IMO anyway)

I really like the way that long threads now take up fewer pages (for example, the "Pictures of us" thread used to be six pages and is now three).

I would suggest that the usernames and the navigation stuff at the top of the page could be in a smaller font. The other idea that crossed my mind--and I don't know whether the software allows this--is that if the navigation stuff could be repeated at the bottom it would be nice. I rather suspect that the software does not allow this because I've never seen that done on other boards that use this same general design.

Not too crazy about the new color scheme, all little too feminine for me. Liked the old one better.

I don't recall seeing a warning about loosing our stored PM's. I would have backed them up. There was some personal contact info for other members I had kept there. I'd appreciate any assistance retrieving them.

I like the idea of bringing back your hosting of the avatar images. However, avatar info really shouldn't have been lost in the transaltion to begin with.

Rep points I could take or leave, but they were nice to get.
Posts should display the date and time they were created like before.
Almost all the smiles on the right as I compose this message are red X's.

Those are the differences I can see so far.

I appreciate your hard work Soopa, keep going.

People keep telling me when I make changes to my company's website "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" There's a new one. I saw nothing wrong with the old design either in layout or functionality. I'm not aware of any contests or competition amongst auto-enthusiast websites for the best or flashiest presentation.

Guess we'll have to wait for the webmaster/owner to make a royal pronouncement.

I just hope this thread doesn't get moved to some other forum 'cuz it's off-topic.

Cheers!

i've been-there tried-that, no one would ever pay for a forum. the best model for a forum like this is to attract large #'s of members and then get the vendors and advertising dollars.

on some other vBulltein sites i go to i can select to view all posts of a thread on a single page. there are legitimate bandwidth concerns with doing this, but a caching server can help.

it's all php code, placing headers and footers is a snap, Soopa just needs to do it. sounds like they will offer selectable CSS's which will allow you to change the color scheme and whatever else can be jammed into a CSS. IMHO, this current color scheme is crap, but then again, i dont run the site.

keep up the hard work Soopa and gang.

Having run a website in the past, I can tell you that after a while, the "same ol' look" gets kind of boring, and makes you want to shake things up a bit. Usually this is tempered by the amount of work involved. Setting up a new look isn't TOO much work (don't get me wrong, it's a lot of work... just not TOO bad), but converting all existing documents, databases, etc. to work with the new system is. Usually, something other than the simple urge to change prompts a makeover like this. For example, they may have found vBulletin to be cheaper (I'm not sure what they were using before) or easier to maintain, they may have had compatibility issues with something new that they wanted to implement, etc. I'm sure that they'll spill more information when they get a chance. Having "been there," I can honestly say that I feel they did a great job doing the changeover in such a short amount of time, and they did a GREAT job communicating what was up while the site was down.

Having said all of that, I'm a bit surprised that they got rid of the rep power. A lot of people liked that, although I'm sure from a moderator perspective, it was probably more trouble than it was worth (case in point: the "Mad Holiday Negative Rep Poster").

EDIT: Oops... I see now, that we're supposed to be posting this kind of stuff in this thread, instead.
