91 or higher. If 92 or 93 is available without a huge price increase, use it.
Do not use less than 91, and especially not 87.

Before this gets into a huge technobabble about high compression and detonation, you should use whatever the manufacturer states. Period. Don't take advice from a salesman that is telling you what he thinks you want to hear..

Now that you have 900 miles you can get the revs up. Put it in 2nd gear and tell me what happens when the tach hits 4000rpm at 60mph and you are still trying to accelerate. I will be waiting for the results.

Just do what I suggested and you will learn first hand why 87 is no good for this car.

If, if you don't have spirit driving during this 900 miles and do follow the break-in instruction by your owner manual, your car would be fine as long as you immediately switch back to what the owner manual suggests, 91 or better.

87 should be fine for normal/conservative/mild driving. I believe there are many ppl outsides this forum using 87 or 89... However, 91 above is the best for your 04TL. IMO. If I see Grandma feeding 87 into her 04TL, I won't stop her and waste my time to convince her how necessary the premium gasoline is... :o
