10w-30 engine oil with additives was what that tech told me. that i remembered cuz i was shocked by the words "engine oil". come to think of it, i am not even sure if it was mobil. many years back now. vague.. i have to find out what i used to make my MT AFU.

I replaced my Honda MTF with the GM stuff (~$12/quart!) at 28K miles and can't say there is much difference in warm weather. However, no more crunching in cold weather which is about half the year here so things better. A 3/8" drive universal joint ($10 at Sears) at the end of extensions will allow fill plug removal without disassembling anything inside the engine compartment. By the way, the Honda and GM MTF look and smell the same (amber color with sulfur smell), so it is unlikely a factory technician would note a difference.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this seemed more appropriate than starting a new one...

Anyway, my '05 6MT TL (purchased in Oct 05) had popped up its A1 service notice a few days ago at about 6000 miles. So I called the dealer to schedule the service. Just for yucks, I asked if they would be willing to change the MT fluid with another brand fluid if I supplied it. The lady taking the request put me on hold to check with somebody and came back with, "No problem, and we'll even discount the cost of Honda/Acura MTF we would normally charge for."

As background, I hadn't experienced any problems with the 3rd gear as noted by others here. In fact, I'd have to say the 2nd-to-3rd and 4th-to-3rd were one of the smoothest shifts in my car. The only problem, albeit occassionally, was with the 5th-to-6th shift. It was almost like I had to shift around a small blockage in the normal 5th-to-6th path about 10% of the time. I had no problems with 6th-to-5th.

So I tracked down a GM dealership with the Synchromesh MTF - Friction Modified elixir we've all come to love, and got me 3 quarts of it.

This morning when it was time to drop off the car at the dealership I was prepared for a long argument with the service scheduler and his manager, etc., etc. But they never blinked an eye about it. Just asked me where my 3 quarts were. And he highlighted the section in the work order which requested the technician to use my MTF instead of the dealership's. Nothing about voided warranties or requiring me to sign a waiver, etc. They treated it as almost routine.

Just picked up the car and drove it back. No big difference in the shifting that I can notice yet. And I had no problems with the 5th-to-6th shift, though it is too early to say that the problem is completely gone.

The technician clearly noted on the work order that he had drained the Acura MTF and replaced it with customer supplied GM MTF Friction Modified. They even left the third bottle in the car with half a quart of unused fluid in it.

So clearly this dealership has dealt with such a request before, and the whole transaction was quite smooth. They are Open Road Acura in E. Brunswick, NJ.

Revisiting this - I've had the occasional problem shifting into 3rd gear since the car was new but have not been able to consistently reproduce it to bring it to the dealer. Does anyone know if Acura is generally aware of this problem?

Gm syncromesh

Just a note. I also found my 06 TL to be a bit tempermental going into third from the day I bought it with 200 miles on it. The dealer changed the fluid with syncromesh and covered it under warranty! Since the change, the car shifts like it should. Flawlessly and effortlessly.

I changed mine at 12K and now at 18K the shifting is still as smooth as day one...IMHO is one of the best modifications you can do to your car....

As always, at the first sign of any transmission problems, drain and refill the transmission with Honda MTF please.

Michael, Now I am confused "again"!! I thought you said you liked the RedLine MTF the best? I was going to buy this one over the Amzoil. Could you please help me out. I am sure I got the info incorrect. Somehow....

Which one is "THE BEST"? RedLine or Amzoil?????

Dunno if RootBeer ever used it.

The point is that you can use GM Synchromesh, as it seems to be working for the members around here quite nicely. However, it has absolutely zero endorsement by GM for usage in Honda applications, so if it causes excessive wear to your transmission, you're SOL, meaning analyze the transmission fluid to check the wear pattern of the transmission.

OTOH, Redline MTL and Amsoil MTF have always worked well, in the past, especially Redline, in Honda transmissions. I only know of one person on this forum who is using Amsoil MTF...and I think it did fine for them. The main differences between these two and the GM product is Redline and Amsoil backs the fluid for use in Honda MTF applications.

So you wouldn't say Redline is better or Amzoil is better? I just want the best I can get for my Baby. Thats all.

Thank's Michael....

I think Kilroy? has used RL MTL before will good results.

I don't know which one is better, honestly, from an analysis or usage standpoint. All that I know is that Redline MTL has had a proven trackrecord with Honda enthusiasts for years whereas Amsoil's product is very new on the market.

Cost wise is about the same...myoilshop.com sells Redline for a very good price.

Best advice I can give you is to try both and compare...

Since my Dad has been an AmsOil dealer since what seems like their inception... (I'd guess 20 yrs or so) I went with the Amsoil equivalent to the GM Synchromesh.

In January, I made the switch at the same time I installed my AEM CAI (having the air box out made it really easy) and it made a tremendous difference.

I thought the TL was just a tougher manual to drive until I made the switch. If you haven't done it, do it. You won't regret it!

I just switched out the GM stuff for redline mtl. As much as GM synchromesh gets raves on this forum, I prefer Redline. The car seems to shift better…. more of a silky feeling than before or a hot knife through butter. I will definitely be sticking with redline in the future. Especially since its up to 5 dollars cheaper per bottle!!!
