Don't know about best of both... but I go 6-Speed. Why? Brembo brakes, thicker sway bars, and LSD come standard on the 6MT.

Although, I do like the ease of use of the 5AT in traffic w/option of fun shifting.

AT... would have liked a 6MT but I'm just too lazy to be shifting all the time.

6MT. I would not have even consider the TL with an automatic. In '99 I bought a Nissan Maxima because the TL wasn't offered with a manual. I just traded the Maxima for my new TL. To each their own but I'm proud to say I've never bought an automatic transmission vehicle.

Cool

I would have opted for the 6-SP Manual but if you know anything about the traffic in the SF Bay Area (24/7 congestion) the shifting would get old real fast.

I am really happy with the 5-SP Auto, though. Very smooth, and I can shift if I want, when I want!

Regards,

Talking Auto 'cause I live in Traffic Hell

Used to drive MT's, but I'm getting old and lazy. Last car I got was an auto (my first auto; have had about 7 mt's), and I really appreciate it now. I live in congestion hell, and the auto is just easier. Haven't purchased the TL yet. Plan to this weekend, but it's going to be an AT w/Nav. Besides, I always end up having to buy clutches on MT's 'cause I'm a maniacal, suicidal, aggressive, urban fool who rides the clutch and drives excessively fast! (hey, at least I'm honest.....)

I got the 6MT against my wifes wishes. She plans on learning but I know it will be frustrating to her. She can barely drive an automatic. Buy what you want-dont let your wife make the decision for you!!!! :chainsaw:

Tried to teach my girl to drive it. She shifted from 4th to 2nd on rt 280: I have no patience: she will not drive anymore!

She is to nervous to try again!

6mt

6MT, had been driving stick-shift car for 19 years. Traffic or not, that is still the way to drive a car. Plus 20/30 for 6MT which has better gas mileage than the 5AT (20/28) too . My wife can drive stick too (although her current car is an automatic), so it was an easy decision.

And you plan on letting her drive your TL?

My G/F will never drive mine! She'll just have to stick to her Accord or ride shotgun.

I keep telling her it's technically sophisticated for her. Since she's not tech-savvy to start with, my argument works.

Damn...I'm so condescending aren't I?

As long as you want to shift when the damned computer lets you! I can't stand the fact that you can't use the SS to shift into 1st, even when you are only going 15mph. I'm glad I did the 6 speed.

I'd love to let the car drive me. When I'm stuck in traffic on the 401 I'd prefer to get into the back seat and enjoy some DVD-As. Unfortunately the car won't drive itself!

What I really want: Clutchless sequential 6 speed with the Navi package!!!!

It’s crazy to hear all these manual owners talk about how it makes the car drive that much better and that much faster. Or it has Brembo brakes, thicker sway bars, LSD and better weight distribution. Give me a break; you drive on the streets not a damn race track. The advantage that all the stuff will have on the street is minimal any ways. I would say about 98% of you guys will never even take you car on the track or to an auto cross.

Most people will be faster in auto because people don’t know how to drive a stick properly to get the full advantage out of it, or can’t even drive the car period. People can’t even drive their TL’s on the streets with out bashing a rim on a curb Yet they want a 6 speed because it’s half a second quicker than an auto. Can you guy’s break, downs shift and plip the throttle to match the engine speed with the next gear that you are downshifting into all at once? If you can’t then I would say you would be faster on the track with an auto than you would with your mighty 6 speed.

I know I will catch some :tflamer: for this post put I just have to call bull$hit on you 6 speed owners. :thefinger :thefinger

what you want is a SMG 2 like the BMW M3. Sequential Manual Gear box has clutch but is engaged electronically. the traditional manual and the SMG only differ in performance by a fraction of a second between each shift. the stats for the cars are almost identical with a little edge given to the traditional manuak tranny. the one advantage that the SMG has is consistency, it will always react the same way as a regular tranny the driver can miss a shift. but to me there is no replacement for a clutch pedal. just not the same without.

dude that is alot of anger you have bottled up inside. yes most of us won't go to the track or autocross, and we most of us are not professional drivers and will make mistakes when driving a manual but its fun for us(at least for some of us). when i drive an auto it's just plain old boring. my first car was a manual tranny and i loved driving it. i got an auto next car and hated it so much. now i finally got a manual tranny back and i love driving again.

hmmm

I have to say the manual for me at least is way more fun to drive. I am bored by automatics...I would like to think I can outrace a automatic...but really I dont care if I could or not. Its just fun as hell to row the gears...to each his own but I know if the TL only came in auto I definitely would not have gotten it....I would have gotten a 4 cyl accord or tsx.

6MT's are for purists, I think. The poll results don't surprise me, because this type of website is for purists, and purists love the 6MT.

I would love to have bought a 6MT, but traffic where I live is just too much. Some day I'll have a third car, my ice cream car, and I'll get a manual tranny for sure!

Yes, I can. :thefinger

And no, I don't plan to race or autocross my TL. I didn't buy the TL so I could be a half second faster than an auto. The desire for a manual in a car like the TL is (generally) not about street superiority, it is about feel and control.

Autos are getting better, to be sure. MB has a 7AT coming out that they claim accelerates faster than the 6MT by .1 seconds to sixty.

I have never owned a car with an automatic, and I have owned a few. I may own an automatic someday, but it will be a 3rd or 4th car. The SMG has appeal, but a computer-controlled slushbox is just that.

In a few years, I may have to eat those words . . . . .

but not today. :toothless

I got the 6-speed because I like the extra involment the 6-speed gives you over the automatic. I still have my GTI because I figured I was going to need it for the autocross. I took the TL to the first race just to see how it would do and found out that I am actualy faster in the Acura than I was in the GTI. So yes, the limmited slip differential and larger sway bars make a differance in how the car handles. I have not driven a automatic but I am sure it is fun too.

burgman what yr is your gti i had a 98 vr6 jetta and had nothing but problems..when the car was new every thousand miles had to add a quart of oil, i only use synthetic so that got quite expensive, the service manager told me its how the vr6 and 1.8 turbos run, of course i said thats ubsurd!! when it hit 100g thats when the shit hit the fan, it drank oil like a drunk on nickle beer night,, i sold it to some kid for next to nothing a girl i started seeing has a 1.8 turbo jetta 04, i told her about the oil she laughed said my vr6 was six yrs old, so i said lets go check your oil, the car had 6000 miles on it had one oil change and guess what it was a qt low..she is not happy...when i was looking at getting a new car, just for the fun of it i went to vw dealer told the salesman i was looking at the r32 gti, i said before i test drive i want to talk to bill the service manager, and asked him to guarantee this vr6 would not use oil like my 98 jetta, he could not, i said thanx and walked out...got my tl, stopped back to see bill told him the money i save in oil got me this tl....he just laughed, i got to know him well as my car was in the shop quite a bit...sorry to ramble on...and ofcourse sixspd silver even makes it nicer

I had a '95 VR6 and the 2000 is much better built. I never had a problem with it using oil. I was also looking at the R32 but I figured that if I was going to spend close to $30k, I should get something competely different from what I already have. The TL is much nicer that the VW; I am glad I got it instead.
