48.3 MPG 5AT 3G TL!!! (no flame please)

Drove from here to niagara falls and va and back home, mid mpg 35 mph 53.

measured with OBD2,
Fairfax VA walmart (elevation 409ft) back home , and checked mpg near Johnston rest area in NC. (elevation 160ft) i-95, i-295, i-95 again.
there was no minimum speed limit, 11pm to 4am??ish. but I used 4way flasher to tell peeps (if there were even any) i'm very very slow (stayed in 45-50, occasionally from 40 to 61 when there's big hills)
intake air temp 78-82, ambient 40, tire 37/33 running.

I discovered the 45-50 sweet spot going through 45 limit roads in VA. always thought 50 is the slowest i can drive for best MPG

cruise control is only MPG effective above 52mph or so when engine has enough torque to go up little hills. you should get 38 over a flat surface between 50 and 55

below that, it's all in the right foot, staring at inst. MPG meter.
mine stayed in 5th, locked up until 42mph or so, almost at 1200rpm (diesel much!)

even if it wasn't downhill i still would've gotten 40 lol.

1. if you're using cruise control, you're not really hypermiling

2. I'm not forcing you to believe this. and i sped after that (at the limit, 70, which gives me 29avg) and got home with one tank of gas with low fuel light on. 490 miles total. would've arrived without low fuel light if i was patient enough all the way

3. just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's not possible

now i'm gonna put on the type S rears and put a hitch and load it and see how much it sags towing, hypermiling machine = 3G TL

who needs a prius right?

PS : the foot and ass pain isn't worth the money i saved in gas. but it was fun and accomplishing.

Yeah, not sure I have the patience too see people pass me on any type of road. That's pretty good but did the light just come on at 490 or you were well past it being on? I ask cause one member got like 535 out of his but he did I think 65mph his whole journey.

So you were a danger on the road, a nuisance, and a cause of traffic backup to save a couple bucks? Great.

That's some good MPG's, but it is a bit silly to be going dramatically under the speed limit. I'd try and find some roads where the speed limit is 40-45 so you can cruise around at 45-50 all day without much complaint. I still don't see why everyone else always gets all bent out of shape when someone says a few year old slow family sedan can be reasonably efficient. Isn't that a good thing?

However, people generally don't understand the speed limit is the speed LIMIT. You're supposed to travel at or below that speed, not 10-20 above. But hey, everyone else is doing it...

More proof it is not what you drive but how you drive. This morning I was doing 70 on my way into work when a Chevy Volt flew past me doing 75-80 and hopping lanes trying to get ahead. I highly doubt he was getting the 30-40 miles out of the battery pack that you're supposed to get.

Wait, so this was downhill? I have a picture in my phone of 30 miles worth of >50mpg at 70mph. Only problem, it was downhill and I cheated by resetting the mid once I was at speed.

well downhill as in destination was lower than departure. there were up and downs.. a lot.
mine was over 200mls... (like that makes a difference )

I'll second this. First you have someone that posts MPG information with no picture and later reveals he's going downhill. Then, an otherwise solid forum contributor (Swoosh) posts about MPG and then links a picture showing 90% oil life. Really?

The mods need to install software that allows people to vote on the quality of the thread AND then shows the results. There is too much junk on this board and it drowns out the good information.

Ok, I'm off the soapbox. Apologies for the rant...and inadvertent bump.

i did an oil change before my trip to Dallas....

here let me post up some more pix to satisfy you:

for some reason I cant open my photo album on Azine...check it out:
https://acurazine.com/forums/members/swoosh-235067-albums-chma_de-means-kiss-me-hindi-1588/

I have 2 mpg pix in there...those were couple years back drove to STL from KS and back in 1 tank and I stalled (ran out of gas) a mile or 2 away from my exit....

half tank i got 240 some miles....full tank I got 505 miles and stalled....cant link the half tank pic for some reason but here is the pic when i stalled....

these are some recent pix:

as i said, i constantly get 32-33 mpg on the highway if i drive in a very civil manner

getting 500 miles in a tank is not that bad....I have gotten it in couple occasions

He was showing you the trip distance obtained on a single tank! Not his oil life!

Your post is actually a perfect argument for your request to have a quality of post meter!

Funny enough that the mileage on the tank is actually pretty close to 10% oil life used. I think I get a service indicator every 5k miles or so.

I will always remember the summer before my freshman year of high school.

We were in California and my grandfather was driving us on the highway. We got pulled over by the CHiPS. They were worried because my grandfather was driving so slow on the highway, they thought something was wrong....

Yeah mine was 42 mpg the last time I did a lot of freeway driving. I do mostly city driving so it's down to 18 mpg now.

This is exactly the kind of thing people rant about. Your TL does not get 42mpg on the freeway on level ground. People don't put enough emphasis on altitude gain or loss. Just a slight downhill, nowhere near what a human can notice can boost mpg by 7-10 mpg easily and you'll never know you're going downhill unless you watch the GPS. That's why I always say to measure real gains you need to go both directions. Again, I get 24mpg on the way to work, 35-40mpg on the way home. It's a 45 mile drive and the altitude change is not noticeable to me but watching the GPS it's surely there.

I'm well aware thanks. Everything affects efficiency, the car simply calculates avg efficiency based on mileage and speed and it's been pretty accurate in my case. Coasting, downhill driving, light throttle instead of flooring it, driving at speeds in accord with the cars drag coefficient before hitting the air wall, etc. all lead to better mpgs. It all depends on how you drive.

Exactly. But posting your TL gets 42mpg on the freeway without a qualifier is misleading. It's surprisingly easy to get 45-50mpg on a slight downhill at 65mph but most TLs are going to get 28-32mpg on level ground at a steady state 70mph. Any significant changes are going to be from abnormal external factors, the one way type lol. Believe me, posting your TL gets that kind of mileage will lead to 5 more pages of what's wrong with my TL because it doesn't get 42mpg.

Many people don't understand all the factors involved, that's typical of all things in life.

^ Yes not even a picture of the MID like the others have done. IHC is right on how altitude affects MPG so going down hill isn't a valid test. A round-trip would satisfy me though if that data had been provided.

My guess a round trip would result in 30 MPG which is what many of us can easily do on level ground. I got 34 like the others going 75MPH on a recent trip so the TL is pretty darn efficient.

On a side note, Kia/Hyundai got smacked on overstating their MPG claims. Our TL can get the same MPG as a Kia Soul does with its new -6 MPG adjustment.
