Of the professional jobs I've had, three I've gotten from knowing someone who knew someone who was hiring, or from a past co-worker that got back in contact with me. One was just straight up, applied to an opening and did the interview. And one was a placement via a headhunter.

It might be worthwhile to get in touch with a recruiter/headhunter. It doesn't cost you anything (at least down here) and they have all sorts of insight into who is hiring. Plus they get paid by placing you somewhere, so they *will* find you a jerb. Downside is that they will find you any jerb to get them paid; not necessarily the jerb you want. You can use that to your advantage though... Get your foot in the door, make contacts, jump ship, rinse and repeat.

I actually lost my first job before I started.

I applied, interviewed, got the verbal offer, and HR was working on the paperwork. And then I just stopped hearing anything from them. Ended up that the project I was supposed to get hired on for, got cancelled. So my job vaporized.

BUT, a few months later, another opening came up and I got a call from the manager asking to come back in for another interview. Got hired. And it stuck that time.

So again, it's really about getting to know people and being at the right place at the right time.
