I don't build guns. I buy them then modify them to suit my taste or shooting style (ie hammers, triggers, seers etc.)

I've never modified a pistol. I've torn plenty down and cleaned them, but I've been pretty happy out of the box with all mine so far. I have a feeling the 1911 will be a different story though.

I'm not into the whole AR scene (no offense Jeff). I prefer other platforms.

Shotgun is the best for home defense. Point in the general direction, pull trigger, done.

Pistols require a lot of training to master effectively in high stress environments, plus, the bullets can go through walls and doors and hit unintended targets.

Even if you are shooting buckshot...

The pellets will have exhausted most of their energy by the time they travel through a wall. A bullet has much more velocity and weight. The rifling helps them penetrate better by focusing the energy better. The same laws of physics that allow a bullet shot out of a rifled barrel go farther and more accurate also allow it to penetrate better and maintain more energy longer.

I shot a ported barrel .40 sig that had less kick and much more punch than my glock 9mm. Loved it, just not into any of that enough to dedicate more money to it...

I need another costly hobby like I need a .22 to the head.

Not to argue wacker as I have a mossberg 500 under my bed with 00 buckshot.
I do not feel a shotgun is the best home defense weapon. Bulky, reloads slow and even though it showers pellets it is not a 1 shot stopper.

The best home defense or weapon period is the one you are comfortable with, know how to operate and one that you practice with.

Some say the AR is actually a damn good home protection.

The time it takes you to shoot a 12 guage and chamber the next round and get back on target, or to shoot a big caliper pistol and get sighted for a second shot.

In that same time you can blaze about 7 or 8 rounds off with an AR or similar rifle or you can dump a full mag of .22lr.

So it really all just depends. How big is your house/room. What are the surrounding structures. Apt with close neighbors? Kids, kids in bunk beds.

Really it all depends on what you enjoy shooting and can function in a dangerous situation.

Swoosh, just buy a pistol. Unless its a 1911 there is not a whole lot to building those.

With an AR platform once you have an upper and lower receiver which don't really change there are about 18,492 different ways you can customize your setup if not more.

I meant your attitude that you can hip fire in the general direction of what you're shooting and blow it to bits with a shotgun. You still need your target in your sights with a shotgun, especially in close quarters. Buck won't spread that much in 10 feet. You're better off using a 22/38 or sbr for home defense. I'd rather have dual chambered birdshot and slugs.. birdshot to stun, slugs to pop them open when they're hiding behind the wall.
