2007 TLS - Downshift with Automatic Transmission

Just picked up my black 2007 TLS today with 29K miles on it and I am already in love

Just had a quick question and I haven't seen much in the search.

Is it normal, when slowing down coming to a stop sign, to feel the car down shifting slightly into each gear? I've driven a manual for the last 6 years in my Evo and my wife's 2010 Camry doesn't really do this. Just want to make sure it's normal.

Great forum so far, love all the TSB links.

EACH gear? No, not necessarily. It'll typcially skip gears. Say 5th to 3rd to 1st as your near a stop. Depending on how quickly or gradually you slow down, it my go straight to first.

It'll also rev match on downshifts. You'll feel this especially as goes into first as it can feel a little abrupt or harsh.

This is NOT the Grade Logic feature - that comes into play on .... wait for it .... Grades.

Grades, I think I might have gotten a B in one class officer

Grades as in hills and inclines, the transmission will downshift one gear to help go up and use some engine braking to help on the way back down.

I felt the same way-it takes a little getting used to. I've never had a car that did this either.

Actually, no Acura 5AT can skip gears. Only the brand new 6AT, found in the 2010 MDX and ZDX, can do that. Read below, directly off the 2010 MDX module:

"In either fully automatic or Sequential SportShift mode with the paddle-shifters, the 5-speed automatic transmission used in other Acura models can only downshift one gear at a time. The new 6-speed automatic transmission now has the ability to double kickdown, or downshift two gears at one time. The ability for automatic double kickdown vs. manual kick down with the paddle shifters depends on the shift lever position. With the shift lever in D and normal automatic transmission operation, the transmission can automatically double kickdown as needed base on the PCM’s calculations and the vehicle’s rate of deceleration. Although the transmission can still double kickdown automatically when in the D mode, manual double kickdown is not available with the paddle shifters. Similar to D range, when the transmission is in S, automatic double kickdown is available. And when the transmission is in S, the paddle shifters can be used to manually double kickdown the transmission for aggressive deceleration. The PCM only allows the transmission to downshift if it determines it is safe for the engine and that engine speed won’t be too high."

Just want to put that out there

i know this is a source but i can only iterate what i've experienced because i have 5AT TL-S. i use sportshift like 80% of the time though. if you're in 3rd gear in sportshift mode and you slow down to a stop you will see it go from 3 to 1. that's just only one example. but i personally can feel the car skip multiple gears like that at times.

I know it may feel or look like it's "skipping gears", but it's not. The whole point it, on the 5ATs, it's still going through all the gears. In your example, for instance, even though it shows 3 going right to 1, the point is that it still had to shift down through 2nd, even if but only for an instant. Another great way to experience this is by driving a 10 MDX/ZDX, letting it get into 5th or 6th gear, and then flooring it. Trust me, you'll understand, feel, and hear the fact that it skipped down, from say 5th to 3rd, instantly, rather then have to go through 4th too.

Furthermore, one the reasons Acura spent two pages to describe all this in the module was because they are trying to get across that it's a new feature, and something the sales people can use as an advantage with a potential customer. I'm of course on the technician side of this, but their training brings it up too.

I'm not trying to argue with you either, just trying to make it clear that while some say the 5ATs can, they are infact not skipping gears. Though since I own an 07 TL-S 6MT, I have the extra pedal that allows me to skip any gears I want (Though I seldom do because it causes extra stress and what not on the internals, but that's a whole different thread discussion)

Oh and I forgot to mention it in my initial post, but welcome to the forums OP and congrats on the purchase!

Exactly where I had noticed it too.

acuratech239 - thanks for the reference and clarification.
