04 Transmission Concern?

My 04 TL Auto Transmission feels like its have trouble changing gears from 2nd to 3rd. When I accelerate slowly keeping my rpm around 2000 it usually changes gears smoothly but recently its been getting stuck at around 2000 rpm at my 2nd gear trying to change into my 3rd gear. When I accelerate faster it does it pretty ok.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Hmm... I called my local Acura dealer and asked about transmission issues on the 3rd gen TL and I also asked if my car was covered under the recall that they ran on some early model '04 TLs. They ran my VIN and told me that my car didn't qualify because Acura had fixed the issues with the transmissions later in the '04 year. I know there are still a few people on Azine with 3rd gens that have tranny issues though.

you must have talked to a service writer who fed the standard line of ....
They didnt fix it in 04,,gen3 owners never got their act together and made a court case like gen2 did...and they get 7 year+9month 109k miles trans warranty now!
There wasa vin cutoff in 03 ONLY because the court case needed a number to settle -does not mean they fixed anything!!!!

IN early 05 they made a change in the physical casting of the scase of the trans unit- better oil flow, and that went on the gen2 warranty replacements

Its my guess they use warranty rebuilds to test out changes for production
Which means ~maybe~ the 06 got a decent trans finally...but an 04...its just an 03 made a few months later

Speaking in PERSON with the service MANAGER is the way to get `Goodwill` help from acura on a trans failure.
read the last few pages of gen2 `Tranny failure thread` and my post for help ( I used to work in the biz-insider tips)

Your tranny is on its way out...I got mine replaced @ 53k for free with the EXACT same symptoms...my dealer told me this is somewhat common with 04 and 05's. The newer tranny's they are putting in are supposed to be much better, i guess any tranny built or rebuilt after early 07 are good to go. Lets hope so at least!

I'd suggest changing the ATF (maybe Amsoil / RP) to try and amend the shifts. You could also get the old ATF analyzed so you know what's really going on. Check the drain plug for metal.

get the current fluid analyzed before any change-
and if its already got a problem=- amzoil may be too slippery for the clutches to still engage

There's a bunch of members with failed clutches with less than 20k miles, not to mention 3rd Gear Issues. Look up GM Synchromesh.

i have an 05 SSM TL and my transmission went bad at 34,000 miles. Have no idea how it happened but apparently alot of people have been having transmission isssues with thier 3rd gen TL around this time. So far ive read 3 posts on acurazine, along with two people that i know and then myself, who have all had problems with the transmissions dying out under normal conditions and driving. Mine was replaced by acura of Valley Stream, they did a really great job on the car even though it took a week and a half to fix.

I did a transmission fluid change at 80K at the dealer and now im at around 95K.
I did buy the extended warranty which is supposed to cover my transmission and engine if anything is wrong with it.

oh btw would anyone if the dealer would give me trouble if they see my AEM intake installed?..I dont want them to VOID my warranty for stupid reasons like that. I don't personally believe an intake would have anything to do with the transmission issue but I dont want them to use that as an excuse.

Yep, you must remove the plastic belly pan to gain access to the drain.

lankin--wow am I glad to hear you have a warranty--go get your free transmission today~
they dont care about a cold air setup, not related to trans failure

Lowered cars can forget warranty on cv joints and ball joints, but short of a supercharger (and there have been exceptions!) the trans is covered without question

Auto trans drain boltand the filler bolt have ATF stamped above or on it--engine oil says oil

I was told the same, my 04 tranny was in the 'fixed' catagory, and the 'fixed' tranny was replaced at 105K.

Do yourself a favor... when they act like your tranny problem is a 'new thing', and they act suprised you are having this problem, go along.
They will be more enclined to help you if you act cool.
Unless you are still under warranty, then they have to replace it.
Your tranny is definetly showing the beginning signs of failing, of that I'm sure.

beware.. I have heard of shops that wont touch the car because of aftermarket parts - even if the aftermarket parts have nothing to do with the service. Seriously.. look back on the threads and you'll probably find someone who has encountered this.

It is a standard characteristic of the TL to have some harsh gear changes when accelerating really slowly, I have driven over 20 different TL's over the years and they all have done it.
