04' Tranny Help - Input Needed 216K Miles

Love my 04 TL. I drive allot of highway and finally the tranny started to slip. Luckily I was a mile away from the dealer. Dealer hooked me up with a 2012 Tl (sweet) until they could look at it on Monday. Anyway big dilemma:
1- Dealer said cost to replace the tranny between $4-6K
2- My A14 service is also due – another $1.5K
3- I need new calipers n front – who knows – no biggie.

I called a tranny shop with a pretty good rep and they said a rebuild/ refurbish will cost $1,600 - $2600.

So the big dilemma – put my baby to rest – BTW I was going to give to ny daughter.
Let the dealer do the work?
Tranny guy – no its not an AAmco or other chain.

Any input would greatly help!

Thanks and cheers!
Andy

Spend $200 on the 3rd/4th gear sensors and Redline Type F and see how it goes.

+1

Since you already have the slipping, I would try the type F fluid/ switches.

Tranny has over 200k miles so if the above doesn't help, then I would have a rebuild.

Might sound like alot of money at once with the service due also, but the car should last another 200K+.

I think it is justifiable if you plan on keeping the car and turning the keys over to your daughter.

Good idea if you plan to keep driving yourself.

On the other hand, if passing on to your daughter, go with the rebuild at the transmission shop. Some experienced members of this forum could give a list tranny components that also should be replaced as part of the rebuild (e.g. sensors).

Shop around for the A14 service. Too bad you don't live on the east coast - I think the Honda dealer in NJ is still running their super deal on timing belt/water pump replacement.

If the car has been well maintained over the years, put the $3k-ish into it and your daughter should have a decent car for another few years.

Andy,
Since you are in IL.
Try http://www.pitshopgarage.com/contact.html
They are certified Acura/Honda Techs. Much cheaper than the dealers.

At 216k, you're doing nothing more then replacing normally wearable parts. Priced intelligently, you could be looking at around $3.5k - $6k in repairs to get everything where it needs to be, which at that point in time sets you straight for the next 200k.

These cars are serious long-haul performers, considering the questionable reliability of any other car at the $6k price point you'd be spending on a used ride, it's a no-brainer - keep the TL.

Your tranny may just need new pressure switches as noted, and F-Fluid will further help this; the A14 service can be done for around $700 OTD if you shop around, and the front...????/

New calipers? A rebuild kit is around $30 9or did you mean pads or rotors0

How much do you think your daughter will be driving?

It is a solid car and you got 216K out of the first transmission. I think I will spend the money to have it repaired and hold on to it. I would probably not go with the dealership though. Find a reputable shop.
