Post '04 TL Moonroof blown off

Ok everyone as you can see I'm new to this but been reading a bit on this forum as everyone else who has a 3rd Gen TL. Well the other day I was driving on the I-84 west bound in CT and my moon roof just blew off - yes, just blew off. My windows & moon roof were closed. I know most of have not have heard this happen but believe me not it just flew off.

I know it’s very hard to believe me but I’m just blown away by the way the roof just went up in the air. Luckily there were no injuries or other cars involved as it was late in the evening.

So all of these happen, so I went to the dealer where I bought the car and since I only had my TL for almost 5 months hoping to get some support from them, this is what I got, before I tell you their response let me set the stage by saying the following:

1. I have (had) a moon roof visor
2. It happen this past weekend (10/29) that we had lost of rain both Friday & Saturday
3. Sunday was a beautiful day
4. Also have MDX purchased from the same dealer, yes I LOVE ACURA
5. Service Center area staff are very good (I get my services done there)
6. Acura was established in 1991 (I think right????) so they been around 15 yrs

Ok, so here is there response after the evaluation of the moon roof:

a. Stop lying, you must have done “something for this to happen”
b. I been working here for over 20 yrs and I never seen this happen before, yes Honda has been around for a long time but not Acura – maybe that’s what he meant!
c. “It seems like someone tried to pry it open” I said you serous? Yes, because there is scrapes on the front side edge of the moon roof opening, but then I said visor was on the way no they ripped it off – oh well it does not make sense
d. Final evaluation: This does not look like it just happen, therefore it had to be forced somehow

As you can see I’m not happy with the answer because I did not do anything to make it happen, I have filed a claim with my insurance but not yet giving them the OK to paid as I will continue to purse this with Acura. Any ideas/suggestions??? I can post pictures if you would like…

I hope things go well for you. I've never heard of a moonroof blowing off for any car let alone a TL.

FYI: Acura has been selling cars for about 20 years so the service manager's assertion is plausable. Acura started selling a small car that was called the Integra in 1985? or certainly 1986. I remember shopping that against the 1985 Prelude which I wound up buying as my first Honda car- had a couple of Honda Desert bikes prior to that.

Is this a Halloween 'Trick or Treat'?

If not, sorry to hear about it. Possibly someone did try to break in the car but I doubt it.
Let the dealer service department know that you will not be blown off. Get it escaluated to Acura District Rep ASAP. They need to take a good look and explain what caused it.

Next Acura comes from a different dealer!

Thats good, that is definitely something I would do. Give them a call and see what type of response you get from them prior to calling the insurance company. No need to get the insurance company involved if you don't have to as it may raise your premiums. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I remember reading that someone else had the same problem. Their moonroof shattered from the inside out. I'm trying to find the post.

The guy even posted pictures and showed how it was blown from the inside. Acura and the dealer replaced the moonroof.

After you said that it made me go and re-read his whole post , but it was his whole moon roof that blew off.

Lightbulb Update

Ok fellow TL'ers & Friends...

Called Customer Services and they will be having the dealer re-evaluate my moon roof and make the decision then, most likely it will not take place until Monday (11/6) as that's when the decision maker will be there, meantime me luck.

BTW... I had my friend @ xxtuning_dot_ com put in the 3M film protection until the new moonroof gets replaced.

P.S. - Thanks All for the support/concerns/comments/suggestions/ideas/etc...

1.) You might consider filing a complaint with NHTSA. I would hate to be driving the car following a TL if the roof blew off.

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

2.) There was/is a big recall of the C6 Corvettes for the roof flying off.

In my years modding here, that's the first time I've heard of the moonroof flying off ANY Acura. Shattered, yes, on a couple of occasions, but never blown off.

I wish you luck with the dealer. They should help you out here.

Ok, this is the second time I have ever heard of this, the last time was about 20 years ago in the UK ;at about 100mph a buddy of mine had his moon roof lift off and impale the radiator of a following car, they decided it was due to a low pressure area above the roof due to the speed, he was really lucky that it wasnt a couple of feet higher!

I've been thinking about upgrading the sub, but It's mostly the wife's car and she likes trunk space (MDX does it for me Memphis Amp w/ Sub 1000 watts) - the roof has not blown of that one yet !!!

How fast? about 80-85, windy and around 11 PM

Did you SEE the size of the woofer they used in the episode?? Even at the highest setting, a factory subwoofer couldn't do such damage. Even in the show, it only popped up a little bit, not completely blown off.

Check your messages. I sent you a reply. Sorry for the delay.

Your situation seems a little different from mine as mine exploded from the inside out but did not blow off. Hopefully this gets resolves with Acura to your satisfaction.

Please keep up posted as to your progress.

Good luck!

The January before last my sunroof also flew off the car. It was not open. I too had a sun visor as well. Took about 5 weeks for them to fix.

They too claimed they have never seen this. And claimed it was someone trying to break in. I ended up having to go through insurance and pay the ductable. I ended up NOT replacing the visor. I did notice some scratches on my door where maybe some one was leaning against the car as they tried to break into the sunroof.

I am still not convinced of vandals but, who knows.

I had a problem once where I was driving along Highway 80 towards the Bay Area and the winds were very high. My shade was pulled, but all of a sudden I heard a wooshing noise. Turns out the moonroof had opened up somehow (in the tilt position). I couldn't close it by moving the switch towards the front like you normally would, so I had to use the switch to open it all the way. Only then would it close!

Just heavy winds?! It was a windstorm that created a sigificant amount of damage to the whole northeast!

See:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n2136129.shtml

I think this factored into the equation a bit.

Anybody thought about "why would they go for the moonroof anyways?" in response to Acura people thinking that someone's trying to break in? Don't our doors work better for the thief? Are the thieves trying to have a contest of who can fit in the smallest opening? Just a thought... it must have been a very slim guy who is too tall to fit in the door... =)

What you think - shattered/blown off/exploded - all the same?

Thx All again for the comments, here is what I've been pondering

I think we need to keep count/track of how many of us had/has this problem, because MR1 is on the right track after so many times it will become a recall or something.

Mythbusters woofer Enthusiastic
As much as I like the show like you do: 12-ft woofer diameter, not a chance it fits in our cars (TL) - Thank you for the analysis.

Shark - Got your PM Thx - even though it might have been similiar still mine could have exploded and then flew off ~ Just a possibility. +1 moonroof

jcondon - +1 moonroof Westchester, NY area
Vandalism I don’t think so either.

Lore - I know your did not officially came off but I think it qualifies as defective malfunction - +1 moonroof Bay Area, CA area

S3-Captain - you right windstorm versus just windy.

integr89 - You hit right on the head, why would a thief use the moonroof when it's easier through a side window/door - alarm would go off no matter what. I keep forgetting about those 10 ft tall individual who prefers to use moonrof vs doors.

My count so far from reading all other refered posts, if I miss count please some1 correct me.
  1. Kreolo - Hartford, CT
  2. Lore - Bay Area, CA
  3. jcondon - Westchester, NY
  4. Shark - New Englad area
  5. sftroy - Says that he heard of it happen in Northern Cal 1.5 yr ago (Post #15)
  6. huyster1 - location ??? (Post # 20)
  7. CSI - Says it happen some1 else ~ location ??? (Post #26)
  8. mjferguson - Says it happen on a MDX - Idaho (Post #36) not sure to count or not
  9. timnguyen9 - Northern Virgina (Post #1)
  10. cdavec - Calgary, AB (Post #19) read his
OK this is all I found, not sure if its all 3rd Gen TL. Location I took it from what the user registered under....Hope you all have other input/thoughts.

But this all relates to Tempered Glass on Honda/Acura.

My car is an 2004 TL. The glass (or maybe the visor) hit the top of the trunk lid and took a good sized chunk out of the paint. The trunk lid and part of the quarter panel had to be repainted. You would never know it was repainted they did a very good job with the paint. Took too long to get the glass properly installed though. They had to take the headliner down several times and order extra parts.

Lucky it was late at night and no one was on the road behind.

Acura claimed there were tool marks that indicated someone tried to pry it out or open. Some of the screw heads were supposedly cut off or something.

The visor is what they think the people were after and not trying to get in. I said well you guys charge like $125 for the visor and I have seen them online MUCH cheaper. They didn't budge from their assetment. Even after someone else from Acura looked at. I was worried the insurance company would say this is a defect and we aren't paying. But, after a week or so both agreed it was vandals.

Anyway good luck in getting if fixed quickly and properly. And hopefully not too much out of pocket. The time without your car is the worst.

Not really what I thought. Your initial write up made me think the whole piece of glass and the frame flew up out of the car as one big piece, not that it shattered first. If it did just fly up as one piece I was more interested in if the tracks had failed, some other fasteners, etc. That's all.

I hope you are successful with the dealer (Schaller, Avon or Morande ?)
