Sunroof detachment possibilities

Webasto assembles the sunroof for Honda. They receive the glass panel from another supplier. They glue the glass panel to a steel ring and then bolt the steel ring to the actuator mechanisms. There are three possible failure modes for the panel flying out of a vehicle.
  1. Glass shatters and falls out of the center of the steel frame.
  2. The glass detaches from the steel ring due to improper bond.
  3. Steel frame detaches from the actuator mechanism

Failure modes 1 and 2 are much more likely possibilities than 3. However, they are all possibilities. Unless you were working on the sunroof for some reason, your dealer must assume it is a manufacturing defect. I have seen the process, it is certainly possible.

Smile Good News For ME!!!

Ok Everyone here are my final thoughts on my moon roof;

Schaller Acura of Manchester, CT – did a phenomenal job on replacing the moon roof for me at NO cost to me. Please take not, it was not ruled as malfunction or factory defect. Since I’ve been a long service customer and customer of two vehicles from them (01 MDX & 04 TL) they were able to convince Acura that it would not to the best interest of Acura to loose a customer such as myself and therefore agreed to cover the moon roof expenses (~$2200), BTW I do LOVE Acuras

I do not mean to discourage any of you out there who this may happen to, but you need to be persistent and make sure you build your case properly so they may be able to service you in case you fall in this predicament (hope it does not happen).

Now, I’ll just have to seat and wait and see if the installation is going to hold (no doubts about it as all new parts, screws, sun visor, etc got replaced).

The tempered glass & presure may be an issue, guess we are going to wait until more incidents happens (hopefully NOT) I don’t want to see anyone else go through this, no fun - trust me.

THANK YOU TO ALL POSTERS OUT THERE FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUGGESTIONS – it was very helpful (AcuraZine has done a great job keeping all of us informed).

GREAT NEWS. But call me a bit skeptical. I'm not sure I see how a sunroof along with it's frame can be "liberated" from the vehicle without some serious issue. I'm with dougw246 on this. Unless you were messing with the sunroof, which you said you weren't, then something just "gave it up". The pictures in your car seem to show only the tracks and nothing else. For them to suggest they are doing you a favor may just be to make you feel indebted to them. I always loved how dealerships say that they are doing you favors since you get your service there. To me that's backwards. Warrant the f*cking car properly and without hassle and you might get my service business and/or future purchases, not the other way around. It's not like you were asking for warranty consideration 2 months or 1Kmi after your warranty expired. That's when it is a good will favor. Your sunroof flew off the damn car. They should have been apologizing to you and concerned if you or any other motorists were injured.

Also where does their $2200 come from ? This link seems to indicate about $950 + labor if you needed the frame and visor in addition to the glass. Is it really going to take >10 hrs to do the work ???

And it's not like you are some young kid that dealers often stereotype and suspect were messing around with the car. Seriously though I'm glad you are all set with the car. I'm just a bit more skeptical about Schaller now. FYI they are also one off the dealerships that is dumping GM branded MTF in the 6MTs for their customers that ask or complain about shifting issues. It's pretty clear to me that Honda will not cover any gearbox issues in those cars because of that. I'm not sure how I feel about a dealership doing that and wonder who is going to pick up the tab for those customers if something goes wrong (admittedly it is a small chance).

(Sorry for the rant)

Moonroofs blowing off was not uncommon 20 years ago (Porsche 944's for example), but I have not heard of this since then.

Glad they fixed it, did themselves a bigger favor than you. I would have had to take them to arbitration or court if they didn't do the right thing. Glad they decided to fixed it whatever the reason.

Say what you want but after reading the whole thing I' m kind of scared. I don't believe they would go through all the trouble to replace the sunroof for free if they knew they were not at fault. Good customer or not... you're talkig about $2,200.00! They must know something we don't know. It might also be one of those "silent warranties"... they would rather fix a problem on a few cars rather then recall thousands of them...

don't know - hope my moonroof stays put!

I'm curious if any tooling marks around the opening of the roof. Was anything painted when you had it repaired ?

Suppose if someone had pried the roof up enough to loosen the adhesive could it have failed as Dougw246 says in his #2 mode of failure "The glass detaches from the steel ring due to improper bond" ?

I am a bit uncomfortable with this since the roof shouldn't fail in a hurricane with the HVAC on full.

I'm glad to hear this was resolved to your satisfaction, kreolo. It's good to be a regular customer, I guess. Still what a bizarre problem.

The bottom line here it that they took care of it, regardless of the reason or cost. Glad they stepped up for you!

I have always been an advocate of letting the dealer service my car (within reason) to document that I am a loyal customer and that Acura has maintained the car. I have seen it happen where a dealership will go the extra mile rather than ostricize a regular and loyal customer.

They did NOT paint anything and there were NO tool marks as well. Forgot to mention they also replaced my wing spoiler as it had scratches from broken glass.

Thank you all for the support.
