Which Wheel Do You Like on Gray RLX-SH ?

Hey tribe. Can you help me decide which wheel looks best? I've decided to pass on the ZDX-S lease deal and keep this great ride a few more years so am replacing my curb-rashed OEM wheels from 2016.

Konig MRK1 19 X 8.5 43mm Offset in painted Graphite vs MSW Type 48 19X 8 in Gloss Black with Machined Metal. Both fit fine. My car is dark grey metallic - Acura calls is Graphite Luster Metallic. I'm currently on the 2016 dark grey OEM wheels19 X 8 5X 120 w 50mm offset from the 2016 FWD model because I swapped them out from the silver-colored Sport Hybrid wheels when I bought this car almost a decade ago. I thought I wanted all grey but I really like the black machined wheels on DW's MDX-S. What do you think? Originals are curb-rashed but in good condition otherwise, always balanced and serviced at DT, for sale if anyone interested, $150 per wheel or $350 set.

First Konig

Next MSW

I like the last set of rims on the RLX.

I went aftermarket gloss black Petrol P4B 19X8 76.1 hub bore 35 offset rims on my 18 RLX. I purchased a 5th rim for a full size spare (I was surprised a full size spare fits in the trunk with a slight raise in cover). Having a full size replacement came in handy twice over the last 5 years when I hit pot holes a few years apart and it bent my aftermarket rim. Easy to order a replacement rim from Discount Tires each time. I hit my first of three pot holes with OEM rims on a few weeks after purchase in 2019 and only got a pinch flat. Not sure if OEM have higher construction or I was just lucky to only have a pinch flat? I check and couldn't find a single OEM replacement for under $450 if I bent the OEM next time and decide to go aftermarket instead. At the time, 2 aftermarket replacement rims were cheaper from Discount Tires compared to one OEM SH rim because of shipping $$$ starting to get out of control during the pandemic.

I also have:
- taper/conical black lugs,
- no hub rings on RLX with the aftermarket rims having a 76.1 hub bore size,
- conical Gorilla black wheel locks,
- still on original OEM tires (planning to upgrade to Conti DWS 06+ this fall),
- painted the silver parts of all calipers to black to match from black/white Acura logo on front calipers,
- didn't notice more road noise without the noise reducing resonator plastic thingy on OEM rims, and
- the OEM TPMS X-fer over to the aftermarket rims.

I don’t like either of those aftermarket options personally, the OEM wheels look the best out of those three options

Curb rash repair

DW said same thing. She likes the OEM rims. I’ll look into curb rash repair and repaint today.

Good point about the extra Rim for spare tire.

Powder-Coat Refinish on OEM Wheels

I’ve heard from several folks and the wheel refinisher that OEM wheels will be much higher quality than aftermarket, even w 10-year old wheels. Can anyone add insight or perspective to this? Is OEM quality better?

It’s unanimous that OEM aesthetics
is better.

Price is ~ equal. $1100 for MSW aftermarket versus $900 for refinish. Aftermarket is sure easier, Discount tire, 2 hours, all good.

It is $900 and 3 days to clean, strip, repair, refinish, powder coat and clear coat a set of 4X 19” in silver wheels, This includes tire labor and 3 year warranty at a very highly regarded shop in PHX, Express Wheel Service.

The price includes:

🛞 Storing vehicle in covered and gated parking

🛞 Dismounting the tires from the wheels

🛞 Inspecting wheels for bends and cracks

🛞 Chemically stripping the original finish

🛞 Removing / repairing curb rash

🛞 Sandblasting the wheels

🛞 Powder coating the wheels

🛞 Clear powder coat top coat

🛞 Cure time

🛞 Clear coat protection

🛞 Ceramic wheel protectant

🛞 Install tires and laser balance

🛞 Mount them to the vehicle

Usually, yeah OEM rims tend to be better unless you spend a lot of money for genuine BBS/Enkeis/ETC. A lot of the high end aftermarket manufacturers make OE rims for cars. For example, 2002 3.5RL wheels were made by Enkei. OE rims often adhere to decently high standards by the SAE and various other regulatory bodies. Aftermarket rims a lot of times aren't tested and certified to the same standards. This is usually the case for cheap/rep rims.

Also, facelift P-AWS rims might be an option to look at. They look kinda cool to me.

That's what mine are. When I purchased my RLX in late 2016 I asked them to swap the silver-ish metallic wheels on the Advance Sport Hybrid for the base P-AWS painted gray wheels that I have on the car now. Dealer said "sure" ; Dealers were desperate to sell these RLX's back then. I think I paid $52K out the door. I thought the P-AWS wheels coordinated with my dark gray paint better back in 2016 and am still glad I made the swap.

I guess I am leaning towards refurbishing my OEM wheels. I'll keep you guys posted.

Decision made. I ended up buying then returning then buying again... MSW Type 48's from Discount Tire in Fountain Hills, AZ. The price was $1052 mounted with new TPMs and locking lug nuts. Really happy with the package. After a week would buy them again. Bright machined alloy pops the chrome window enclosure and front grill. I still plan to have the OEM wheels cleaned, stripped, repaired (curb rash blend) and powdercoated, but will just be easier on my own schedule. And $300 cheaper to drop off without mount and remount. Money was not the primary driver in my decision, but I figure I'll up keeping using two of the extra four wheels for spares on my MDX-S and RLX-SH, so it's approaching a wash if I consider the price and utility of full-size spares. Bonus was that I was able to ceramic them brand new. Even DW says they look better than she thought they would and she's a skeptic on my car adventures - but she did help me realize I didn't want a new car, just new wheels. Curb rash is a character flaw, right?

It's a bit of a splurge but I realized how much I like this car even after 9 years of daily driving. Now I love it again. I'll get pics of the overhauled OEM wheels up when they are finished. See you out there!

I really like the look of the new rims. They look way better compared to the website pictures. The dark lugs are a nice touch also.
