Upgrading from 2011 RL to RLX P-AWS

Cars for Sale: 2014 Acura RLX in Brighton, MA 02135: Sedan Details - 376452942 - AutoTrader.com

Hey,

I currently own a 2011 RL Advance, and I when I was in Boston on a business trip, I took a look at this Acura RLX '14 w/Navi. I was quoted 28.5k to trade RL into private dealer, which I personally think is fair. I've owned the RL for a year, but the RLX very much impresses me despite its shortcomings. If your reading this forum, you probably know all about what the RLX has to offer. I could go on for days talking about how the RLX is superior to my RL. However, here are just a few problems with me upgrading to an RLX from RL. I haven't made the purchase yet, but am highly considering it, due to cliff drop depreciation values for RLX. Here are my big problems though. Despite these, the RLX is much more nicely designed on the exterior and interior than the RL.

Problems with RLX Base /navi:
-No SH-AWD
-Harsh Ride
-Many RLX owners reporting various problems
-No wood interior
-No CMBS, ACC, Power Fold Mirrors, Backup Sensors
-Not liking the style of base RLX wheels
-Car simply doesn't drive as nice as the RL does
-No sunshades
-Hard to use controls

I'd wait a bit for the SH-AWD if you really want AWD. It also has the toys that you list. Don't settle. Many of us are not, and it appears the prize is closer than ever.

If you can find a new one, just get a TL SHAWD tech or higher. If you like a sportier driving experience, get the 6 speed if you can find one. I turned mine in early off a lease for an rlx and have regretted it every since. Prior to that one, my wife and I had 3 tl automatics. Bulletproof cars. Not a hiccup. Gas and oil. Period.

Agreed;
and- I've lowered the pressure in the tires to negate the harsh ride.
I've kept my 06 RL Tech, I have a fully loaded 14 RLX and am happy with it for the most part.

Hi Terry,

I'm in the same boat as you -- the deals on the 2014s are almost too much to pass up.

I'm just going to give you my $.02 on RL vs RLX and why I haven't traded up.

-- AWD is a huge one -- you live Canada, you know this better than I

-- Interior build is very good on the RLX, but I still feel the RL is built better overall. From a design perspective, the RLX has a very nice interior, and the upgraded technology is definitely nice.

-- You could always buy the wood pieces and add them from the RLX Hybrid or RLX Tech package (I think I estimated it to be about $1500 for all trim pieces)

I would wait it out -- your RL, like mine, will go the distance without any issue. I get wanting a new car -- I have the new car bug too One thing I know about Honda, they will engineer the RLX Hybrid as best they can -- better than any other company out there -- and they will stand behind the car. Another option is to lease a RLX Hybrid, or simply sit tight another 2 years or so and grab one with 20k or so on it to keep costs down (expensive cars depreciate FAST).

Just my $.02 -- I would keep, for now, what you have. Feel that suede headliner in your RL? It's awesome, and now it's some nylon material in all new cars to help save weight. Feel the nick thick leather around your shifter? The leather around the RLX shifter is light and flimsy. I realize I'm really nit-picking, but its the little things when you spend big $$$ on a car.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Is this established, really?

If it is, then we might see a rebound as people get used to it and the predicted overall reliability becomes documented by Consumers Union and others.

I'm interested in seeing the cliff drop depreciation's documentation, if you can point me in the direction of something official.

I'm still only seeing one or two/dealer, unfortunately. :-(

You're going to have to be quick on the draw, against other Honda enthusiasts.

In my part of the world there are a dozen listings for Acura certified RLX Advance, with the dealer prices averaging 43,500.

That'd be a very good way to go, but it appears to belay the idea that there is a huge depreciation, considering that you can still buy a new RLX Advance anywhere from 49,000 - 55,000.

But I await the discovery of where I'm wrong.

other than harsh suspension, I disagree with does not drive as well.
It is quicker and faster than the RL and far better turn radius. I have yet to really push it in high speed cornering, but so far I feel it does a good job.

The quickness is very noticeable compared to RL

Thank You.

Hey,

Thanks for your opinions. I've come to the verdict that I'm not going to upgrade my RL, just yet. As nice as the RLX is, I just can't live without SH-AWD, and the harsh ride is too much to bear.

Since I only buy cars from Japan I've weighed out all my options, including the RLX. First, is a slightly used 2013 Lexus GS, the problem here is I simply don't like the 'in your face' styling, and it doesn't handle as well as the RL does. The next is a 12 Adv. or 13 ZDX, but I feel as if the harsh ride, and loud engine, and sporty pretensions, simply aren't for me. The interior of the ZDX isn't the same clean and understated luxury that the RL is. The infiniti M37x is very impressive, but the audacious curves just aren't my style, and I find that it has a harsh ride.

At this point I can't consider a TL, nor a TLX. The TLX I don't believe is on par with the fit and finish of the RL. The tight interior, and smaller exterior can't stack up to the RL. So really at this point the plan is to wait for a MMC RLX, or grab a used RLXh in 2 years. Thank you horrendous depreciation values.

Terry...

If you can't wait, then only the RLX Advance will satisfy most of your issues - minus the suspension and lack of SH-AWD.

Otherwise - I'd wait to test drive the new Hyrid SH-AWD or wait for MMC.

Although, there was an Acura product roadmap that was shown somewhere online in a news report some months ago, and one of the concerning things I saw was absolutely nothing regarding changes, future development, etc for the RLX. The roadmap chart showed as far into 2017, with plenty of updates and product development going on across all the other vehicles. The RLX...nill...zilch...nada past 2015...

Just curious: did the dealer recommend the lower pressure or actually lower it for you? My dealer did this while making a misguided attempt to correct the suspension problem. When I picked up the car, the pressure was 28 psi on all four tires! While I did notice a very slight reduction in the clunking of the suspension, I raised the pressure to the recommended level, which is approximately 20% higher!, and the clunking was the same as before the replacement of the dampers. No way I was going to drive on under-inflated tires in an attempt to mask the noise and vibration.

I owned a 2007 RL and sold it in January of 2012 with 170,000 very enjoyable and 100% trouble free miles. I replaced it with a 2010 Rl with 22,000 miles. I really like the minor interior and exterior upgrades. I am starting to get the bug and considering a new TLX with tech when I can get a discount down to $38,000 or a used RLX with Tech for the same price. Test drove both the other night and enjoyed both. Leaning towards the RLX. The trouble is would only consider white as a first option and light silver as a second. The interior has to be a light color. The problem is if I go to cars.com and do a 500 miles search about 30 cars fit my search parameters but 95% have ebony interior. There is only one other manufacturer that I would buy and that is Lexus. Looking at a 2013 GS350 which is slightly higher but running into the same lack of light interiors. I love the interior and exterior of the new RLX and the better gas mileage but hate the fact Acura went Lexus's way and does not allow use of the navigation system while driving. Question for the readers is the 2015 TLX did not allow this but did not test on the 2014 RLX. So does the RLX allow you to operate the nav system when driving? Thanks for any feedback.

I have a 2015 RLX Advance which has the Nav, not sure you can do manual, most of my other cars with Nav then answer is no also, but can do voice while driving.

You cannot do typing while the car is moving. You can't enter an address manually, or make a phone call by typing the digits.

What you *can* do is use the voice command system, which will take a little while, of course. You can also use the knob to scroll around, zoom in and out, or mark something.

While you're traveling, the best solution is to press the AcuraLink button overhead and speak the natural address that you want sent to your car's NAV. You could also connect to the Concierge or Agent and get them to do the work for you.

:-)

You don't really need the address to use AcuraLink, by the way.

You can say things like, "the Olive Garden restaurant in Glen Allen VA" and it'll work. Both the automatic server and the Agent will search for you that way, and the Concierge will do almost whatever you want (short of an illegal act).
