Google Maps now offered in CarPlay

I just tried it in my 2017 F250 on the way to lunch, and it works great. I plan to check the wife's RDX tonight. Prior to this update, I found absolutely no reason to use CarPlay however, with Google maps (and the ability to download a map for offline use if needed), I see myself using CarPlay much more often now in both cars. In my truck, CarPlay was pretty clunky, and just not polished. After this recent update, it appears very responsive. The only downside is still the touch pad in the RDX, but I'm not sure that is too huge of a deal and would not be surprised to see an update in the future.

Was using it this morning but, I couldn’t get the voice recognition to work. I hit the microphone and it came up with the display “where do you want to go?”. When I uttered the address I wanted, it just stayed on that screen. Can someone else give it a try and tell me how it worked for you?

Look awesome, thanks for the pix.
Anyone with the HUD can verify whether Google map displays directions there?

Abd for for everyone hating the lack of zoom with the Acura nav, I didn’t see any way to zoom with Google maps either.

If I unplug the iPhone from the car, Google maps on the phone works as it should, and I can do a search, select a destination, then plug the phone back into the RDX and proceed with the navigation, but obviously this isn't ideal.
Worse yet, Google Maps in CarPlay on the RDX has the same issue as the baked-in Nav: you can't select a zoom level and have it "stick" during travel. You can use the little arrow keys to scroll around and zoom, but then it's just like the "explore mode" in the built-in Nav and it won't automatically center the vehicle position. Gestures don't work, and overall the interface is extremely primitive compared to the phone app. Not to be rude, but WTF?

Apple insisted on modifications, so in Carplay, we are stuck with what Apple allows.
I set up the destination on the phone, and set voice to ‘alerts only’ and I got that icon on carplay. However, if you change it, it only toggles to on or off, and cannot get back to alerts only. I do like the way Google Maps looks better than the way Apple Maps looks, but using Apple Maps lets you use Siri to (try to) send directions via voice. Too, after a while, my Amazon Music under CarPlay freezes up.
I have an iPhone 6, and I am waiting to see how Android Auto is implemented, and am considering switching to Android if it lets me do what I want. Otherwise, I will just live with it. Being a very early adopter of a brand new design RDX, I expected some issues, and I am fine with what I have come across.
The car still is great, and IMO these are minor problems. I would call them ‘first world’ problems, but that is too broad, so I will call it ‘top quintile’ problems.

I respectfully disagree that this is a minor issue. I use GPS navigation in my cars all the time; I'm more interested in useful information than entertainment when I'm driving. And it's increasingly clear that the GPS system Honda/Acura chose to integrate with new Acura models is inferior to the Garmin-based system now integrated into Honda vehicles. This is supposed to be a more "premium" product? Complete and utter FAIL!
The Garmin interface isn't perfect, and it has a learning curve, but it's been refined over decades. Why the heck did Acura think they should start over?
As for CarPlay, are we sure the car interface for the GPS apps is Apple's doing, or is it coming from Acura/HERE? Has anyone had a change to use these apps in other CarPlay equipped vehicles?

No voice commands make it to Google maps via Carplay for me either.. I get the prompt to speak when I select the microphone on the vehicle screen within Google Maps, but it does not acknowledge my speech. When I press the talk button on the steering column then Siri answers, which does not know about Google Maps, only Apple Maps on the iPhone. So this may be a limitation of using Google Maps on Carplay with the 2019 RDX or a glich or a user training issue for yours truly.

Google Maps is pretty nice on CarPlay. One thing I notice is that you can use a satellite view. That can be convenient when looking for a POI. Apple Maps does not support that.
However, there are some things missing. Google Maps does not display the speed limit on the map like Apple does. If you have a model with nav you will not really notice because it shows the speed limit on the instrument cluster anyway. That is the only place I look for it anyway.
Also missing is any way to add a waypoint, change to an alternate route, or do anything else but stop navigation. Apple supports these.
Hopefully Google will add Siri Shortcuts with iOS 12 out. This could make up for some of the comments above, where Siri cannot control Google Maps.
This is a nice start.

To answer my own question, I did get a chance to try CarPlay with Google Maps in another car, a 2018 Honda CRV Touring, and Google Maps seems to have a similar interface to what it has in 2019 RDX, but the app is badly broken. Apple Maps works OK, except when it doesn't work at all. ( Switching between GPS apps seems to be a reliable way to break it ). So yeah, beta testing continues in HondaLand as well.

I can't wait to see how the Waze will work once they get that app updated. That may be the ticket.

Same here, can't get microphone to work in Google when plugged in. I did see a video where they were comparing google maps between car play and android auto in a Subaru and the voice recognition DID work. So, it must be something with the 2019 RDX, not carplay/google issue in general. I am going to try with my wifes 2018 TLX to see if it works.

Are all of the USB ports connected to the infotainment or just the one in the console?
Wife just got her 1st iphone a couple of days ago and she loves google maps and Waze. The timing of the app releases couldn't have worked out better for her.
