How many miles can you drive after Range shows 0?

Any idea how many miles you can drive after Range shows 0? I think I drove a mile or two before I managed to get to a gas station for a refill. And then I filled 15.72 gallons without trying to "top off".

Advertised tank size is 17 gallons. This means that even after Range is 0, there is at least a gallon of fuel, assuming top off would have gotten me to 16 gallons. So that means I would have been able to drive 20 or so miles (since I average around 20 mpg in the summer).

Honda/Acura are generally pretty conservative with miles left.

Never get below 50 miles left on the guess-o-meter. Don’t want to suck all the crap off the bottom of the fuel tank into the system.

Isn't the fuel generally sucked from the bottom of the tank anyways?

Its a legitimate question to know the answer in emergency. I believe light goes at 3g, and when range is zero 2g left.

Yes this is good point.
https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...stly/index.htm

I'm just so conditioned to filling up only after the low fuel light has come on and that is hard-to-break habit (over 35 years now!). Usually I fill up as soon as the light comes on but sometimes out of laziness, or if the weather is very bad, I delay till the "next time" I'm out. And the next time might be when I'm running late for an appointment and so I decide to fill after I'm done with the appointment. And that is how I get into such situations.

good point. does anyone ever clean out the bottom of their tank? or is that just excessive maintenance?

Fuel pump is cooled by gasoline in tank . Running low on gas is asking for fuel pump failure.

Yes and no, as this has also been tested on modern cars. Basically if your pump is pulling in fuel, it's receiving said cooling effect. When you so low as to where it starts pulling in air, the car will die before the pump can overheat and cause damage.

Related to the original post, I am curious as I just moved from a first gen to third gen about a month ago. My overall range should be about the same, if not slightly better, in the third gen since the increase in fuel economy more than offsets the the slight decrease in tank capacity. But, I've noticed my indicated range is lower than I would have expected, and when I've filled it up with an estimated 10 miles left, I got a hair under 15 gallons. My fuel economy readout matched up to a calculator when dividing miles driven by gallons pumped, so it would make sense I had at least 2 gallons left in the tank. Should be able to drive plenty far on zero range in this case, while the first gen was a lot less conservative. (I would have gotten 17.5 gallons out of 18 when filling at single digit range)

There should be a fuel pump filter that is replaced, but normally people dont worry about it until they are at 200k+ miles, and even then its usually fine. It all depends if you get gasoline at well maintained pumps. Its very important that gas station regularly maintains pumps and you don't get sediment in your tank.

Almost found out over the weekend in upstate NY. Went to fill up when I was low but the Stewarts gas station only had 91 so I kept driving. Im tuned for 93. I didnt realize I was 13 miles to empty with 15 miles to the next gas station. Comfort mode and easy driving and coasting got me to the station with 4 miles to empty.
