Gas Mileage

Am I doing my math right?

The TL is supposed to be getting 20-22MPG, this is what was on the sticker for City driving and the trip computer says I'm getting 22MPG.

The TL has a 17.0gal gas tank.

22(mpg) X 17gal = ~374 miles per tank

My tank is almost empty and I've only gone 270 miles.
This is mixed city and hwy driving, no speeding or crazy driving, hardly ever sitting in traffic burning fuel and haven't used my AC.
Filled with Premium Chevron gas, made sure to top it off and reset my trip meter.

How many miles are you getting per tank?

Don't Panic...yet

Okay, here is the deal. The trip computer in my 04 5AT is extremely accurate. I recognize telling you this might cause you to wind up on the side of a road with no gas one day, so be forewarned.

When my fuel light goes on, I have about 4 gallons of gas left. When the trip computer says "0" miles to empty, my car will only take about 14.5 gallons.

There is a conservative method to Acura's madness and that is to keep people like me from running out of gas in this beautiful fuel-injected computer controlled engine.

So...my point is this. The average mileage has been dead on accurate from day one in my car. If you don't want to drive with the fuel light on or after the miles to empty have hit zero...get gas. If you don't mind the annoyance, pay attention to the average mpg and drive the extra 20 miles... and then get gas! And for the record, I have on more than one occasion driven over 400 miles on a tank of gas in this car. Boring miles (65 -75) but 400 nonetheless.

Yeah I also noticed this and figured the computer was playing it safe. I just got an 04 TL about a month ago. I cringed on my first fillup because I thought it would be close to 17 gallons with the light on. It ended up being ~ 14 like you said. I was relieved. I wonder if thats another reason why Honda made the light come on sooner; to make you think you are paying less at the pump.

I'm finding that the fuel economy on my TL-S is really bad. 16 Litres per 100 KM. (That's about 14MPG). I'm driving in regular city traffic with normal driving. I'm not idling the car except for a 1 min warm up every morning. According to the MPG, I can drive for 343KM or...213 Miles???? Watching the gas needle go down pretty much confirms that the fuel consumption estimate on the trip computer is right.

I filled my car up for the first time last night and got 17 mpg! I hope that isn't the case everytime. I have 220 miles on my car now, so I'm not sure if it's getting poor gas milage cause it's new, or cause it's been like 10 degrees here every day since i got it, or what! Time will tell.

my range fluctuates like crazy. sometimes it drops like 3 miles per actual mile driven....and sometimes it actually increases as i'm driving. usually on average i get approximately a little over 350

There are penalties to having more horse power you know. For those of you with new TL's, you can allow for some breakin time and the mileage should improve.

When I do city driving, my TL gets really bad mileage (~17 mpg). On the freeway I get really great mileage (~31mpg).
It is funny to see my remaining miles before empty in the trip computer actually climb when I do freeway driving after some city driving. Cool! Driving actually fills the tank up! J/K

During the first couple thousand of miles of your car's life you can expect worse fuel mileage as the parts are very tight to start. Once its broken in, it will get better. Also winter fuel often gets worse mileage as they add anti-polution stuff to it.

Freeway driving offers the only good mileage on this car.
My city MPG averages only around 15.

I only got an average 26 MPG last week round trip to/from NYC/Washington, DC doing about 75 mph....and that's with a brand new air filter!
The 6MT gets worse mileage than the 5AT.

My '04 manual gets better mileage than my '05 automatic. My '04 mileage did drop off a little when I installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires this past spring, though. When I had the stock EL42's on my '04 manual, the best mileage I ever got (with the A/C running the entire time, on a vacation trip, two people on board, outside temperature at 86 degrees) was 33.94 MPG. That was from western Prince William County to Kenly, North Carolina last year.

When I first bought my '04 manual TL, my work commuting mieage was averaging 22-23 MPG (in July, 2004). It began to increase pretty quickly to a high of 27.98 MPG. This is city and suburban driving during work commutes which means traffic and red lights and stop signs and such. That was the best I managed. In the summer months now with the new tires, it averages around 25.5 MPG and in the winter around 24 MPG (you get better mileage in the warm weather than in the cold).

I may be crazy but on my car when I get an oil change and reset the MID it seems like after that I get lower gas mileage for a while. Even when I fill up the tank, normally the range goes up to >374 or something in that area, after the service and the MID is reset it will only register in the high 2's. Eventually it goes back to normal.

I dont trust the MID. I just reset my trip odo every time I fill up. My range is between 19 and 23 with about 95% city driving.

If you use this method, you will get a bit more accurate results, closer to those of the sticker. Take your miles driven per tank, divide it by the number of gallons needed to fill.

Example, my last tank went about 279 miles, filled up with 12.96 gallons. That comes out to 21.62 MPG which is about dead on. I have even reset my MID with a tank of gas and it was off by about 3MPG.

I believe that its the other way around...the MT gets better gas mileage than the AT. I'm sure we can all debate this one.

I average 26 with a 50/50 combination of city and highway driving. I've gotten as much as 34MPG on the highway when I really try to conserve driving 100miles between Dallas and Tyler.

I average about 360miles on a tank of gas with a combination of hwy/city, allowing the miles to empty read 0 and I still have 1.5gallons left in the tank.

I drove from Dallas to Denver last year (800miles one way) and averaged 29MPG going there (up hill from Dallas) and averaged 29MPG coming back. On the way back I ran in a pack and we did 100MPH through the state of Colorado. I would get about 420-430miles on a tank before filling up. I've seen my miles to empty read as much as 560miles after filling up and driving on the highway.

I got 270 miles out of 11 gallons on my first fill-up with this car... around 120 miles of it was 65-70mph driving, the rest was city (25-30mph).

That's not, all things considered, bad at all.. especially considering it's been pretty cold this past week with high temps in the mid teens.

Ive been getting the samething since October; just checked my last tank and i got about 230miles out of 13.6 gallons of gas.

But during the summer i remember getting atleast 30mpg going 75mph.
I guess its the cold and winter gas?

I dont think we 6MTs get that much less than 5ATs.. look back at this guy's test way back in the spring season.

I have an '06 TL with the 6MT, I consistently get 30+ MPG on highway driving, and overall get about 27 mpg (mostly highway due to my wonderful commute)

On several occasions I have forgotten about the 6th gear and driven home in 5th - MPG drops like a rock!

I've had the car for about the week and already had to fill up. The trip meter said I had about 8 miles left and the mileage was around 277. The gas mileage is pretty bad. I'm hoping its going to get better. I was driving mainly in the city.

TL sticker says 20 MPG city and 29 MPG highway. Here is the trick - if you drive the car ONLY on the highway, you will experience better than sticker mileage – around 30-34 MPG. If you only drive in the city, you will unfortunately experience worse than sticker mileage ranging from 15-19 MPG. If you drive in between – your numbers will be all over the board. Enjoy!

My gas mileage sucks! I've had my car a little over a month. (1000+ mls) I'm more like the original poster on this thread, but I do step on mine. I am going to try to test it on the next fill-up. When the yellow light comes on, how many more miles should I expect to be able to drive approximately (normal driving)? I commute 15 miles to work on the highway, and a little driving around town. Just estimate is what I am asking. (And don't yell at me if somebody already said it!) LOL!

There seems to be 2 groups of TL's when it comes to gas mileage.

Those who always get 30+ MPG highway and those who get sh|t mileage like us.

i have my car for almost a month and my gas milage sucks. i'm a little dissapointed. there are quite a few guys on here that claim it's gonna get better but i don't see it improving much more. thinking about getting an oil change at about 5k miles to see if their is an improvement.

wow some one from where im from on this forum.

Winter blends will effect your mileage, the new motor will too. As it breaks in it should get better. Also try to steer clear of gas that has 10% ethanol in it. Ive noticed it makes a difference in my mileage

Mpg

I have a 2005 AT and usually get about 15 MPG. Got about 26 MPG on a trip to Vegas accross the desert on I15.

My wife has an 03 MDX, and it only gets about 13MPG.

I've had lots of cars, and most haven't gotten what the sticker MPG promised, but it was usually close. Not so with Acura. Great cars, but we don't buy them for fuel economy, right?

Well I have a 06 5A and consistently average 32.4 mpg at 70-75mph on my trips between SD and LA. around here with 95% city driving I am getting between 17.5 and 20.5 mpg. If I am feeling sporty its about 14mpg

I've got an 07 type-s with about 1300 miles. I'm getting between 16-20 mpg with like 95% city driving. I'm not very light on the pedal either. I hear it gets better mileage around 5-10k miles. Also, I've never had to fill up more than 15 gallons and can usually put on between 270-300 miles per fill-up. On my weekend of like 50% highway driving (fast driving though) I got like 23-24mpg and my range was showing way over 300.

Exclamation Mpg

Interesting post. My trip computer has my 06' automatic at about 28-29 on the highway. This is consistent with what I get over about 15-20 trips. This is at an average speed of 80 mph. No stopping.

There is a possibility of the computer being wrong but I don't think so.

This seems much more than what I see associted with your post.

Wonder why???

p.s. Only use Phillips 66 91 Octane fuel.

Actually same trips in the same vehicle as yours but at 75mph I average 32.4 MPG. Not sure if it is the UR crank pulley or the Hypervoltage system that increased my mileage, but I believe it is the voltage and grounding system since many others with the pulley have not reported any increase in MPG

The computer is amazingly very accurate on these cars, I've tested so myself. I don't bother to completely empty the tank and then refill it up to the top and see how many miles I can drive, first its to bothersome and second I'd rather not let the gas tank get so low.
The computer says I get around 19~20 in the city maybe more I'm just throwing numbers and probably 30~31 on the highway.

Sometimes I can get much more pending on what kind of mood I am, gas conscious or race conscious.

But I will admitt I try and race everyone with an exhaust on their car when I see them.
