Has Anyone found a good case-free phone mount?

Coming from my TSX, I have been using the Kenu Airframe + for a while now (https://amzn.to/2EYNoqT). I really like it because I dont use a phone case and it is sturdy, never drops the phone and is easy to use. Problem is that it doesnt fit well on any of the driver's vents on the 3g RDX and the one way I did get it to fit, it would scratch up the gloss black frame around the vent. I'm wandering if anyone has found a good alternative that's non-magnetic (will never put a case on any phone or stick a metal plate on the phone) and is sturdy and easy to use?

Also, i do not like those suction cup mounts that go on the dash or windshield...I'm thinking there's nothing. One more thing...distance the phone sits from the center console doesnt matter at this time because I cannot use CarPlay as it freezes about 70% of the time i try to use it but thats another story... Thanks everyone!

Why do you need to mount the phone? I never mount it in this car, it would either block a vent, or something else, and it is not needed, IMO.

Agreed. CarPlay and AA are technically safety features. They're designed with an interface for the car. Never mount the phone. Keep it out of sight.

I need to mount it to use Google Maps since every time I plug in the phone and try to use CarPlay it either fails to keep the route active (continually kicks back to the choose route screen with the "go" button highlighted) and/or it locks up the system and i have to pull the fuse. The stock navigation is no bueno. Acura says only a software update will fix it and they cannot find the issue. I've always had one vent blocked and it never really bothered me.

I love everything about this car except for the gadgetry..which is sad because it is one of the factors that drove me to the purchase.

If you find CarPlay becomes non-responsive, check your phone to see if it's prompting you for a settings change OK. I've had it do that a couple of times, but it was Waze asking for permission to contacts or something. Once I ok'd it, everything went back to working.

Poor guy wants a mount advice and instead he gets lectured on CarPlay.

i had Kenu, generic magnet mounts and now Ottie vent mount. It’s bulky compared to other two options but works with all sorts of phone sizes with or without case. No piece of metal on back of the phone either. Removing is a little tricky to get the spring popped back for next use but other than that it’s a great mount.

I got the Beam Electronics for my wife’s iPhone and she didn’t want her phone in a case.

It works well, but is a PITA to take on and off.

Haha, its all good... Though I still maintain that this infotainment system is not ready for public use. Acura Client Services told me they are aware of the issues and are working on a fix. I'd be surprised if there was an update before early next year. This car has ruined my faith in Honda products.

I put this dock in a cup holder for easy one hand docking and carplay use. Pricey, but solid.

F that. There's no excuse for mounting a phone if you have carplay. It's a safety issue.

I sometimes like to have my phone up so I can see it. Messages and stuff. I don't like CarPlay at this point, so that's not an issue. I have an iPhone Xs Max with an Otterbox Defender Pro case, so I needed something hefty and tried this. It worked like a champ:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076B27WP6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076B27WP6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's a look at it in the car, with and without the phone.

How do you know what I do with that phone? I like to see what it's beeping about. And as for CarPlay with this car, if you want to be a distracted driver - use CarPlay in the 19 RDX.

Besides, if I pop WAZE up on my phone what's the difference between seeing it there and seeing it on the car's display. I know - NOTHING!

Carplay in this car is a disaster - so far.

Same guy probably had stuff hanging from his rearview mirror telling you that.

I use a similar type as Oblio. Makes seeing Waze much easier

apple car play still glitchy. Can’t get Waze to snow up in HUD

I was told Waze will give you step by step in the heads up display. Even called service and they didn’t know why it wouldn’t. Walked me through a few steps to no avail. Anyone get this to work?

Never heard that Waze works on the HUD. IMO, it barely works on Carplay.

agree with @Madd Dog ... I don't have HUD, but even when Waze worked for a minute on CarPlay (when i gave it another shot), it lacked some features that the app has on iOS on the phone, so i used the phone at the time

Love the RDX but the infotainment stuff truly isn’t ready for prime time.

Yes, the salesman told me Waze worked with HUD (I didn’t go over it with him when I bought it) and the customer service people thought it would too. The Nav system is meh (at best). Amazing they get it so wrong for so much money.

Who are you and why should I care? Oh, right. You're endangering other drivers when you have a perfectly good CarPlay system.

Have a great day

Kurtatx - is your 2019 RDX working well with Apple Car Play? ACP also freezes the entire infotainment system sometimes so I don’t use it often. It sounds like yours is reliable.

Here is the mount I have been using (pics included in the thread). I was never a fan of vent mounts but this one has been great. I ended up buying one for my wife's MDX as well.

To me, multi-tasking is concentrating on my driving while looking out for all the idiots around me who are not.
