Covid-19 Payment Deferral

Hello everyone,

I leased a 2019 RDX AWD base model for 36 months term. If I take the 2 month payment deferral that's offered by Acura Financial, then the total lease term becomes 38 months. Does this have any negative effect in terms of warranty? I think full warranty on battery ends after 36 months but "bumper to bumper" warranty should last 4 years or 50,000 miles whichever comes sooner. Would I possibly lose out on warranty by extending the lease to 38 months? Thank you for your input!

you mentioned the warranty terms.. is 38 months greater than or less than 4 years? Do you think you'll break over the 50K miles with the two additional months? if the answer to either question is no, it should not be affected.

If you specifically mean a battery with a 36mo warranty, then yes. The warranty term is not connected to lease term. 38mo > 36mo is all that matters. You'll have two months on your own. The same time requirement is true for the remainder of the bumper to bumper warranty: 38mo < 48mo, so that is still active. But your battery concern is really a long shot scenario.

Another consideration is an additional period of registration and insurance. You say ‘payment deferral’, will you then make 38 total payments? Sounds that way to me.

It comes down to whether you really need it or not.

I take that offer to mean he’s now taking 38 months to make the same 36 payments.

I don’t.

I think if he defers 2 payments they come due at the end of the deferral period, and perhaps the lease is extended 2 months.

He needs to find out exactly what they mean. ‘Deferred’ means ‘put off’ not ‘excused.’

And that doesn't change the amount of miles in the lease, but he will be driving a presumed extra 60 days. Right?

Looking at the AFS site, they use the terms "Payment Extension" and "Deferral" in the same way. I assumed they would allow a one or two month gap without a payment; they give you the next payment due date based on your requested "deferral" period. So, at 36mo the buyer will have made 34 payments if a two month deferral was selected (there is an online form). The buyer will then have to make two more payments that were deferred. The deferral causes an extension. ???

I would assume yes.

The OP may already be clear on this and we're speculating because we aren't.

As expected, Acura makes it impossible to find detail in writing online.

Correct but he is still making the same 36 payments that the original lease calls for. Thus he’s not making more payments due to the deferral. He’d be taking 38 months to make 36 payments instead of 36 months to make 36 payments. The key is do they also defer the interest or does that accumulate during the deferral which would then cause him to pay a bit more interest by opting for the deferral.

If Honda Finance US is anything like in Canada (which I'm sure it is), they are deferring 2 months payments which are due ANYTIME UP TO AND INCLUDING END OF LEASE. They are NOT extending the lease term - eg 48 months is still 48 months.. you just need to pay the 2 months back without interest or penalty anytime before returning or upon returning vehicle. My RDX is 6 months old so I just got 42 months of interest free deferral and will re-pay on the day I return the vehicle. Thanks Acura!

So, a two month lump sum would be due as part of the final payment, if not paid earlier?
