2019 RDX has thousands of tiny chips in windshield. Is this normal?
Hello, my 2019 45k mile RDX advance has many small rock chips in the windshield. I think the acoustic glass is really soft...is the dealership able to replace this under bumper to bumper warranty? Is there a TSB or recall for this? It looks really bad when the sun hits it and makes it hard to see out of.
These are pictures of how my windshield looks when the sun is directly shining on it. That's not dust, or dirt, or residue from a spray, those are all mostly tiny rock chips that can be felt with your finger on the outside. I've tried cleaning it with window cleaner/goo gone/simple green/alcohol and it definitely is rock chips.
I think safelite can replace the windshield for around $1,200 but that is ridiculous considering how new and low mileage my RDX is.

You are most likely going to have to replace it. If you don’t currently have windshield coverage on your insurance policy, I’d highly suggest getting it asap!
My wife’s 2017 Subaru Legacy’s windshield was pitted just like yours is, and Safelite had to replace it. We just traded it in for a 23 Legacy XT Touring, so hopefully that windshield won’t have similar issues!

That looks wrong to me with just 35k miles. I have had windshields get sort of like that (maybe 30% as “speckled” as yours) with 100k miles. I would get the dealer to look at it. Definitely!
Good luck.

Check with your insurance company to see if they offer glass buyback. Sign up if available, the cost and deductible will be significantly less than paying out-of-pocket.

I've owned four Honda products in my life. I've found that their glass is the most easily chippable compared to GM, Toyota/Lexus and BMWs that we have in our family. Same goes for paint. Always find new nicks in the paint when washing the RDX. I don't tailgate and try not to follow semis if possible.

No.
That's a shame. Although our Lexus ES350 also had soft glass and paint. I've heard Honda has fragile paint. I'll have to be more careful!

Can't guarantee it will help but you may want to try a clay bar and some spray wax. I've had a few pitted looking spots on my windshield that were actually contaminates stuck on the windshield. In fairness though I also do have a few chips on my car though nowhere near as bad as that. The angle of the windshield definitely doesn't help.

I have a feeling the culprit is the aerodynamic of the car. RDX is probably biased more towards design, therefore the airflow does not follow the hood well. There is a thick boundary layer on the hood, especially in the rear half area. Next time when the car is wet, pay attention to the water droplets on the hood, and you will see a big area of droplets that barely move. What this means is that sand/rock are more likely to blast higher up into the windshield than the hood.

I will try the clay bar but lots of elbow grease and many cleaners has not yielded much improvement. I'm afraid it is definitely small chips and will need replacing to fix.
Maybe it is an aerodynamic issue? Only other vehicle I had with this issue was a Lexus ES. Possibly, due to being acoustic glass, it is more prone to small rock chips? Softer glass? I see this is also a problem with Audi.
If I can replace the RDX windshield with a non-OEM aftermarket and non-acoustic glass in hopes that it is stronger, I will rather do that.

I live in Florida and travel I-4 a lot. My windshield and front end looks like the car has 200,000 miles on it. Dump trucks here are always on the highway and carrying sand. You can see the sand blowing off the trucks and dropping from the tailgate. It's crazy, you can hear it hitting the car.

Sorry dude, definitely not normal. Acura windshields leave something to be desired. My rear view mirror broke off the glass just sitting in my driveway, 20,000 miles on my RDX. Dealer wanted $900 to replace it. I went with aftermarket from local windshield installer for $400 less. The only difference is that the aftermarket, which by the way is an exact duplicate of the original, did not have the rain sensor built into it. (My hand still works to turn the wipers on and off, lol).
