2nd gen TSX door speaker removal/install instructions

Here are some instructions for removing the door panels and installing aftermarket speakers in the 2nd Gen TSX.
Note: the Base package or premium system TSX does not use rear door speakers. Only the “tech” ELS system uses the rear door locations.

My goal was to avoid drilling and cutting so I can put it back to factory when I turn it in at lease end. You are free to drill and cut anything you want but I’m not telling you to do that. Also, if you break something I didn’t tell you that either, you work at your own risk.

The ELS system can handle a two ohm speaker but I recommend going with a four ohm. The technical reasons are a subject for another post, let’s keep this to the door and rear deck 6.5s and save the subs and amp questions for other posts. I haven’t had a chance to look at the base amp so I don’t know what your speakers are, you are always safe with 4 ohm and you’re not giving anything up if the factory speakers are 2 ohm. Again trust me on this.

I installed components up front and ordered a set of tweeter covers form the dealer (9 bucks each) so that I could mod them to fit my tweeters. I will show how I did this as soon as I have more time.

Just about any 6.5 inch speaker will fit but all will need a spacer, typically ¾ inch. The aftermarket does not have a direct fit spacer like the 1st gen has so you will have to use universal ones or make your own. The important think is not to let the speakers hit the door glass.

For the adapter (speaker wiring) it is the 1990 and up Honda.

Tools, basic hand tools,
A small flat blade or “pick”
Rubber mallet
Trim removal tool(s)
Plumbers Putty

Roll down the windows

You will have to disconnect some wiring harnesses so I recommend disconnecting the battery

Keep track of the screws, some have shoulder and some don’t remember where they go.

When you get all the screws out and clips release lift the door panel up slightly to release it from the top of the door. Be very careful not too pull it away too far from the door; you have lots of stuff to disco like the door latch assembly and electrical connectors.


The connectors all have some kind of “catch” or locking tab, be sure to use it before pulling.

Roll down the window and remove the tweeter cover, unclip the connector.

what kind of aftermarket speakers are those? And after replacing the door speakers does the distortion go away or is barely noticeable?

 

I remember there was a link posted some time ago with the speaker bracket from crutchfield for those of us who can't make a wooden one like ours.

Does anybody have a link?

Thanks for posting. This is very helpful. Can you tell me what is the depth limit on the front doors? I am thinking of installing HAT Clarus components in the front doors, Do you think 1/2 inch spacer is enough?

 

hello mercman where is the amp located on the tsx 09 nav!!! i want to put some amps in my car can you please let me know...

The amp on the 2G TSX is located behind the passenger side trunk side panel.

You can’t connect the amp directly to the HU, you have to be on the speaker side of the factory amp.

I have been away feverishly working on an ELS solution. I have successfully tested the proof of concept preamp this weekend (using the ELS HU to control my preamp). I am working on the prototype and do not anticipate any problems with the design.

I pointed out in another post that the ELS amp has a very heavy handed EQ specifically for the factory speakers. It does not sound so good when you install aftermarket speakers. My preamp will eliminate the factory amp and the ELS EQ.

Anyone know the diameter of the mounting hole? i have some eminence Alpha 6 speakers which have quite large magnets. I was wondering if these would fit.

Danny get a spacer, i had to get a 1 inch spacer for my jl c3-650s

 

This step by step would be cool if the pictures weren't so tiny... can't read anything, lol. And I need to remove my panel soon! Any other DIY's around?

 

thanks Ill try and see if that will work. With that 1 inch spacer in, does the speaker not press up against the door panel though? Or is there some room in between there?
