Tires - OEM and new replacement

Hey People - long time reader and first time poster.

What OEM tires did everyone get with there cars? I have Michelin Pilots on my 2010 V6. Tires are ok. Not great performers but I guess quiet and nice cruisers. Wear seems poor. 50,000km on them and down to 5/32". Blew out the sidewall on one of my tires today on a pot hole and looking for replacements now. I think I'm going to replace the whole set and it was down to Yoko Envigors and Michelin Primacy. The Primacys are more $$ but seem to have great reviews. Seems like a nice upgrade on the Pilots. Im scheduled to get the Primacys put on May 8th. Any thoughts on this. Wonders what people think of their tires and if they swapped out the OEM ones yet.

Peace.

The Michelin MXM's have been OE on the TSX since day 1 (starting with the 2004 models)(in the US anyway). They were so-so on the first gen cars, but seem better suited to the 2nd gen cars. I took them off of my 05, but will use them up on my 010. I've had sidewall problems with Michelin's before (tread separation from impact damage), and more than once, and would never buy them, but I'll use them as long as they last. There are many cheaper (and probably better) tires out there (for my money).

If the OP has anything but MXMs on his car then they aren't OE.

The MXMs aren't bad tires but - like Simba - there are lots of tires that are of equal quality but much cheaper. The ContiProContact is an equivalent tire and mant TSX owners upgrade to the Conti DWS - a higher performance tire that is still cheaper.

I've owned a LOT of vehicles. The Michelin Primacy's are pretty good tires, but, Michelin prices have gone way up. After extensive discussion with Tire Rack....I put on Conti's new tire...the Pure Contact. I did this not long after taking delivery of my '13 Spec. Ed. I love this tire. Good ride, quiet, handles great and to me a great replacement for the Primacy's. The Conti has a better tread life...AND something I didn't know when I ordered them....the wheel recesses into the tire...so there is a protection area for the wheels IF you get to close to a curb. Another benefit.

It's a performance all weather tire....so some of you might only want a summer tire....but, this tire is great in wet and snowy conditions. Lot's of pluses for this tire. And the price is right. Beats the Michelins by a long ways. And Conti does not charge for it's warranty program! Most other's do...esp. Michelin!!!! Big bill when you buy 4 of those and also the warranty.

A note about the wheel/rim guard on tires. The wheel does not "recess" into the tire but the tire has a lip that protrudes beyond the edge of the wheel rim. In general, this extra rubber does little to protect your wheel from scratches except in the most perfect scenario.

Most tires have such a lip but the Conti has a more pronounced lip assuming that the wheel is sized properly for the tire - as the wheel width increases, the protection afforded by the lip decreases.

Tire Rack does a poor job of explaining that Conti tires come with a road hazard warranty - it merely notes "not available" on the website.

I fully understand the dynamics of how the tire/wheel etc are made and how they relate to one another. Compared to most tires and wheel fitment....the Conti tire does allow the wheel to recess into the tire....it's all semantics.....but, there is definitely more protection afforded the wheel with these than the Michelins where your wheel is right out there. I'm pretty sure I've owned many more cars than you...and have played with more tires and rims also. I've owned over 60 vehicles and over 30 new ones. Have owned many high performance cars....from Corvettes to turbo Supras...to Saleen Mustangs, Cobra Mustangs, etc.

So, I'm very well versed on most anything mechanical and automotive. Also, aircraft private and commercial.

No disrespect....and thanks for the message....but, I do know a little about what I'm doing.

Not true on "Road Hazard." I have a one year warranty on the first 2/32" wear. And had it on my other Contis I've owned. Collected on one tire's warranty a day before the one year point. Did not have over 2/32" wear.

So, you need to confirm what you say here. You were wrong. Sorry, but, that's the truth. I have my warranty right in front of me. Call them if you wish.

Workmanship and Materials: 6 yrs...free replacement the first 2/32"....pro rated after that...as is all tires.

All you have to do is put the Conti right beside the Michelins I took off....and you can easily see the "recess" in the area where the wheel will seat itself.
My Honda tech...shop Supv.....noticed it right away. And commented on the extra protection that does afford the wheel vs the Michelin and the way the wheel mounts in it.

There are other brands that make a pronounced "lip" that is specifically designed for wheel edge protection.

I've been dealing with Tire Rack for many years. They tell the truth when asked about any issue on any subject. They don't have special interest in any product. They will tell you which ones are not so good and which ones are better, etc. They make every sales person drive every new tire mounted on their test BMW's on South Bend, IN. test track...wet and dry. So, they know how they feel and perform.

Take care!

Aren't you glad you asked?

Let's start by you understanding that you know nothing about me, my background or how many cars I've owned - not that the number of cars owned makes any difference.

You may want to take a deep breath and re-read my statement about the warranty.

Let me say it AGAIN - Tire Rack does a poor job of explaining that Conti tires come with a road hazard warranty - it merely notes "not available" on the website.

Let me clarify that for AF readers - Conti tires come with a road hazard warranty included but that is not prominently mentioned on the TireRack website. The only thing you thing you notice on the Tire Rack website is that you cannot add the TR road hazard warranty to your basket - leading customers to believe that such a warranty is unavailable for Conti tires - it does not mention that it is unavailable as it is already included.

I hope that explains what you didn't learn in your ownership of 30 used and 30 new cars - perhaps you'd like to list them in the "what car did you own" thread so we can all see what cars you think you've owned.

For those folks interested in how rim "guards" work, here is an article from TireRack and here is a picture of the tire in question. You'll note that it mounts like any other tire but the sidewall extends past the rim to afford a bit more protection.
