Advice on shock replacement needed

Hello,

My 2002 TL-S has 50K+ on the odometer. I would like to replace the shocks and have been checking out the local shops.

Midas uses KYB
NTB uses Gabriel or Monroe Sensatrak

Anyone have any other suggestions? My wife is the primary driver and she's not a racer. I'm looking for a good quality replacement shock that can be installed locally. Most of the nice aftermarket shocks have to installed by a performance shop and I don't have one near me.

Your suggestions and input are appreciated. Thanks..

Tokico Blues or KYB are going to be your bes bets.

Gabriel and Monroe are not worth the effort.

I'd go with Tokico HP's. They can be had for around $275 on ebay.

Maintenance and safety. My wife is the one driving it most often and she shuttles the kids around in it. Just want to make sure the car is in tip-top-shape. Isn't 50K the usual life of shocks? Also the original tires are wearing too so that's another maintenance item to get replaced.

50K isnt much. Mine didnt start going until around 130-150k. Bring it in and have a tech inspect them to see if they need any replacing. 50k just seems pretty early and unneeded.

I disagree--the dealership felt it was warranted to replace 2 of my front shocks under warranty, and this was at 34k miles. I have 40 on it now, and looking to replace all 4. I tried to get them to throw on bilsteins (part I'd supply, they'd pay for the labor) after the service guy told me they'd do it under warranty but they wouldn't . So I have 2 fairly new shocks up front, old ones on the rear--and I know they've loosened up already.

My shocks were fine at 80k before I switched them out when I lowered my car... not really a safety issue, more a comfort one in my opinion.

Diss agree for what? 50k not being much for mileage on teh stock shocks? Many many members have more than that on the originals and theirs arent shot. 50k is early for them to be wearing out, and for yours tyo be worn out at 34 k is rare. either you have really bad road there, or hit large bumbs at some point there isnt a reason that they should wear out that early

what about if you just lowered your car with H& R sport?
How many kms can the OEM shocks last?

Mostly depends on how many are already on it, what type of driving you do, weather, roads. There are to many variables to make a acurate guess. My last honda had 80k on the stock shocks lowered (100k total) and they were still fine.

It's ultimately advisable to change shocks/springs out at the same time if you're going that route to save a lot of hassle. Especially if you are DIY.

Tokico Illuminas are the shocks i'm leaning towards.

I drive my car normally not too aggressive but I've been to auto cross once. I think I have about 50k kms on it with H&R. The road here is not too bad but some indentations.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of replacing shocks at 34k. Even with lowering springs a car should easily get to 75k . . . unless its slammed . . . then all bets are off.

If you are determined to go non-Acura then I would vote for Midas (KYB). But if it was my wife, I would be biased towards something like Eibach's shocks. Which I believe are about $350 for four.
