Uphill <60 KM/H Wheel Shudder

Got a nice TL 2002 Type S and everythings going good! Love the car and have taken it on a nice long drive for a short vacation. HOWEVER, since day one, whenever driving up hills, from zero to 50 KM/Hour there's a shudder that you can feel in the steering wheel. Once I get above that speed, no more problems and no problems downhill or on flats or at high speed or in hard corners...no where else. Is it my suspension? My tranny? My car is stock with the only exception of H&R springs.

Chewi,
the name sounds familiar. Do you work at a bar? I'll check out the shudder again to specify it.

Ok, here's where its happening and I think its my transmission, which really sucks the big one! When the car is revving just under 2000 in 3rd gear, the shudder happens. I've only noticed it uphill probably the computer is holding it in 3rd to go up the hill and in any other condition, the computer is shifting it out to 4th. So sounds like my tranny? I'm going to call Acura tomorrow and see what they say and what I can expect in cost and time. What do you guys think it will cost? If I do a tranny flush and go synthetic do you think it will solve the problem? Thanks y-all!

LOL...Chewy is my nickname that my friends call me.

anyways... i don't work at the bar, but i do work in a hotel.

The best bet is to get your dealer to fix your problem.

If it happens while shifting gears..then maybe it could be your tranny.

I heard TL-P's usually have this problem when the car is shakes while driving under 2000rpm...

This happens usually when you try to acellerate on a high gear...like 4th gear.

I have a TL-P and a TL-S at home.

The Tl-p which is a 2000 model... seems to have this same problem but its still running on its first tranny

Hey guys,
I contacted my dealership about the situation and described it to them. I've got a appointment with them and if they can replicate the problem, some kinda service is going to happen. I just hope that its going to be under warranty, which the clerk says it should. If you don't all know, the tranny warranty has been extended to 7 years or 160000km. my fingers are crossed!

Uphill <60 KM/H Wheel Shudder

I have been having the same issues. My 2000 TL shudders & hesitates going up a hill below 2,000 - 3,000 RPMs. Seems to happen most often in 3rd, 4th, & 5th gears. Has anyone had a dealer advise on this problem? Were they able to replicate the problem and segment the area needing repair? Tranny issue?

I guess i have the same problem...
my steering wheel shutters and shakes when i am driving at 60MPH, intially i thought it was a problem with the alignment and tires rotation but since you guys seem to have the same problem i guess i might be another tranny victim. MY tranny never went bad and i have 102700 miles so far..... i hope that is not the case.
let me know what found out??

Just went to the Acura dealer yesterday. It seems my tranny is in the beginning stages of crashing and needs replacement. The tranny is covered 100% under the recall, so Acura is taking care of it. They have also advised to replace a clogged ERG valve which runs around $400. I don't think the two are related in any way so I may do some research with the ERG valve replacement. I don't have an engine light on (yet). It is my understanding that an ERG valve clog would trigger the engine light.

bsnortheim,

the EGR would trigger the engine light and if that is that case you will fail the emission test during the inspection if your state requires emission tests.
how mmany miles do you have in your car??

egr valve should not cost you a penny. You can clean it very easily and 400.00 is a rip off for 1 hour of work and all they do it put an insert in there that is supposed to prevent build-up I don't know how it would. Have them replace the tranny and then search for the DIY on EGR cleaning. BTW when going uphill the tranny will select a lower gear to pull you up the hill faster and not bog in a higher gear, I think it'd called grade logic. My 99 does this and will stay in 3rd usually and accelerate uphill very nicely. No shudder for me though.

Y'all,
Thanks for keeping this thread going. Btw, I got my tranny replaced under warranty with 129000km on it! smooth as silk. I wish that I had gotten the guy to switch out my motor mounts while he was in there, so to all you guys about to get your tranny replaced, think about it. it should be cheaper than if you brought it in just to do the mounts.

If I am understanding the thread correctly, the problem resides in the torque converter (inside the tranny). The converter usually "locks" the overdrive gear at approximately 50MPH. Any load you put on the engine between about 50-60MPH will create this shudder condition, as the converter is trying to figure out what to do. It is basically going in and out of lockup, hence the shuddering you are feeling. Our these cars, the torque converters are known to be weak but in the end does no harm to the tranny.

Someone please chime in and correct me if this is not correct, but I do believe that was what the service advisor told me a long while back.

I should also add that you could probably replace the TC if you really wanted to. The dealer isn't going to bother though unless it is a threat to the tranny (which usually it is not). This is just a characteristic that some TLs have and others don't.
