Transmission Questions........

Im having hard shifting issues on my TL and was told it could be sticking of the valves and its mainly in 2nd gear and going into reverse. Ive tolerated it for sometime now but was interested in flushing it out. My question I was wondering is...Has anyone use Seafoam Trans Tune?

I was thinking of trying that and using that for about a few hours and making sure I go through all the gears and than do a flush which comes to my other question...From what I read on here Ive heard that its not recommended to do a flush through a machine or anything like that and its better to do a flush using the drain and fill method can anyone confirm?

With all that said and done Im debating is it worth me doing this and do you think it will help using Seafoam and flushing the trans? Or do you think it will do more good than bad? If its going to kill my tranny right than and there I'd rather wait till it dies completely from daily use than killing it by cleaning it??

Thanks....

The "drain and fill" method is recommended by Acura and virtually everyone on this forum. There have been many reports of transmission faiures soon after a flush.

So I would stick to the drain and fill technique.

Is your transmission still covered under the extended warranty?

I did a drain on the Transmission earlier this year and was thinking of doing it again with better Tranny Oil. Since I was going to do that I was really considering trying Seafoam.

Cars been out of warranty for sometime now. Car is going on 230k

stay away from any cleaners- even my beloved seafoam
There is no better fluid than honda --for that trans -right now~
anything slicker will cause bigger probs, and even draining out the fluid now can be a hazard- taking away crud sludge that is the friction material for the depleted clutch disc/plates~

So you dont think its the sludge thats causing the hard shifting?

its the self destruction of the clutch plates for 2nd and 3rd that are the problem
Insufficient cooling to them and they wear out-
Removing that sludge particulate matter... may end the trans life

What I would try if not already done- remove the external trans selenoids and clean them. A few ziners have reported success with that in smoothing things again

look in the gen2 thread list on probs and fixes
I know someone did it very recently- have not seen a diy or details yet.
One can look up a transmission parts diagram and see where they are- its 2 or 3 of them - I would guess about the size of your thumb and screw into side of trans- possible wire connected to selenoid?

Help, my tranny just went out on my 2003 TL (109,000 miles) and now am getting such a snow job by the dealership about how they will get a goodwill from Acura to pay 50% of the job if I have some other maintenance done while it is there. I have had all maintenance up to snuff and nothing is due right now. Am I being ripped off by this dealer or not? Anyone out there know about the tranny warranty on this car. She was manufactured on 5-24-2002 and missed "their" recall by 1486 cars. I really need help with this, looks like it might cost me around 3k to get her fixed. I called up a local guy that is great working on Acura and Honda (Master Mechanic) but in business for himself and he said 3k for a new tranny also. I just want Acura to finally admit they screwed up on this tranny and put a new one in for me. ?????????

Read the last few pages of the Tranny Failure Thread for some strategies for getting goodwill coverage. Pay particular attention to the posts made by forum member 01tl4tl.

Good luck.

silica
Call acura corp at 1-800-382 2238 x5
ask for a case file and a manager to call you back as they are ripping you off big time

GOODWILL means- in recent results- 500 labor to remove and replace the trans with a rebuilt one from acura, and the trans $3000 is on acura
plus they offer for $300, 3 year 36k mile warranty with it- buy it!

Talk to the Service MANAGER directly-
if you talked to the service witer/advisor their job is to make money- the manager wants to make a customer happy

note there are some excellent service writers (some are even members here) who can help the customer with goodwill authorization- they have authority from their boss

- but in general
its the Manager who makes the phone calls and decisions
Tell the manager of the many people on acurazine.com that got total free goodwill or the 500-- (read the last few pages of this thread)

What other things are they saying you need??- front and side motor mounts?- thats common failure and should cost under $200 for both -while the transmission is removed
otherwise they quote you $700 for th emotor mounts!!

Be NICE- be persistant- tell the Manager you know, and they know, the problem was not fixed- the vin number was only or the court case to settle
Most dealers are doing 4 replacements a week still- so dont let them act like you are the first one in thios situation
Goodwill was pretty much created for this situation- 1200 cars past limit- what was that - the next mornings production?
I always tell people nothing was fixed because of a vin number- you are the best example

Good luck

was the other part of the 2000 - $1200 for the 105k mile service?
Thats important to get taken care of- but its your choice of the dealer or a small private owner honda shop like your friend has- for that job

None of that should be part of a - pay this and we will still screw you (pardon the language)-
I was in the biz,,, and try to help people now= reduce my carbon footprint and carkarma

Bob_F, 01tl4tl thanks for all your input on things and has really helped me get somewhat more familiar with these transmissions.

01tl4tl thanks for the suggestion regarding the cleaning of the shift solenoid.

totaledTL thanks for the link regarding the cleaning of the shift solenoid Ill probably give that a try later today

Ill keep you all posted on the outcome....hopefully its something small like this. Ill probably end up doing an trans flush as well with some better trans oil than what I got in there now. Besides Acura/Honda trans oil is there anything else you guys would recommend? Perferably something I can get at the local parts store as Im thinking of doing this tonight???

Thanks again.
