Timing Belt

I have 120k on my 03 TL-S. I know im way past the recommended timing belt replacement point. Has anyone had their timing belt snap on their vehicle? Any Ideas on the costs and the urgency of this maintenance?

2 follow up questions.

If the timing belt goes - does the engine just stop, or is it damaged internally requiring engine overhaul?

Has anyone here attempted to change their own belt?

I have to replace my ALT & PS belts and was considering replacing my timing belt and water pump at the same time. 155K on it now.

I have found my own answers to post #4.
If timing belt goes out there will be engine damage.
Finally found a post where Southern did his own timing belt.

Now for the fun part - started looking through my car's maintenance records and found that my car had the water pump and timing belt changed at 105K - it now has 155k.

Timing belt breaks motor is due for a replacement or at least a rebuild. If it was done at 105 your fine for some time yet

So you took the time to take off all the covers and inspect the belt but didnt replace it? Age is more of a factor than miles on rubber belts

i have a real quick question, im on my way to drop off my car for the 105k tune up and im beng charged 225 to put in the water pump, timing belt, ac belt and power steering belt. I paid 139 for timing belt and water pump and 38 for the other two belts. Does this seem about right? Im planning on doing the brake fuild, spark plugs myself. Does about 400 seem like a good price and oh yeah this is at a private mechanic my dad knows. BTW wat kind of brake fluid should i use? thanks.

Re: Timing Belt

Wow, 120K on your timing belt? Dude, you are really pushing it. I was very worried that I didn't change mine until after 90K and I live in Phoenix where it's hot half of the year.

I have a '99 3.2TL by the way.

Its not like they just all of a sudden hit 100k and break. I had 200k on mine and laying side by side with the new one you could hardly tell teh difference.

Seems pretty reasonable. The 400 bucks is much better than spending 800 or more for a busted timing belt and bent valves. BTW 120K is not that bad, but get it done soon.

You cant see the timing belt without removing all the covers. What you looked at was most likely the Alternator and Power Steering belt.

^ '99 TL and at 144 xxx km? Change it for peace of mind. Obviously, you don't know what you're looking for (exactly) so you're better off taking it to a mechanic to get the timing belt changed. Better safe than sorry.
