Timing belt replacement and waterpump

So my tl has 103k miles and after the oil change i got the B4 coded, the timing belt cost 100$ at the dealer but they are charging 600$ labor (783$ total) is this something i can take to my usual mechanic or do i need the dealer to do it? 600$ labor is ridiculous, thats not even including the water pump

Basically can i take this to my mechanic who knows what they're doing?

Well that's who works on your car at the dealers, a mechanic, they just happen to be Honda mechanics. Any good independent shop can get a timing belt done, especially if they specialize in Hondas.

Or try a Honda dealer and see what they say.

What part of the country are you in?

That price is normal, at least where I am. My dealer is charging 860 for belt, plugs, valves but only inspecting pump and tensioner.

$600 labor at an Acura dealership is hardly out of line. IIRC, the book calls for 5-6 hours.

That's why you try to do it yourself providing that you have the tools. I just finished the job on my 07 Accord V6 yesterday and I saved a load of money. All parts at the dealer are way overpriced also.

southern california,

most honda dealers literally give me a funny face or expression over the phone when I ask them if they service acuras, kinda makes me not want to take it to a honda dealer

It's a good thing that the OP started a thread on this subject because there just isn't any info in this forum on said subject...

I've never heard of that, timing belt? Who needs that?

Actually $600 really isnt that bad at an Acura dealership. My step dad just shelled out close to $1500 for the entire service.

This is what i paid for mine. Service included timing belt, water pump, a/c belt, power accessory or drive belt & tensioner pulley. But i had mine done at 170k. It was a surprise as the previous owner swore to me that it was done at 100k...

The original belt that came off of mine yesterday at 120k couldn't have been in better shape. I could have easily went 200k with no problem.

In NJ, Honda dealers work on Acura; got mine done for $399 (TB with Water pump) and another $95 for tensioner pulley.

Apparently not in So Cal per merc009 above. Maybe Honda Dealers out there have more work than what they could handled.

I decided to take it to a shop that specialises on honda and acura, but not the dealer

Im doing spark plus and all that other stuff on my own some other time

The main thing i care about is the timing belt since i dont want it to snap

I read that you need to change the water pump and timing belt at the same time since its more convenient, is there anything else to change with the timing belt? I need to know the part so i can buy it at the dealer and take it to the shop

I would replace the cam and crankshaft seals as well. Cheap parts that are right there and easy to change with everything out of the way.

Sub'd since I need to get mine done in the coming month. I'll be taking it to a local Acura Honda place and having them install my lightweight pulley and gates belt at the same time.

The Aisin kit from Rock Auto is $175 and is very popular here. It has the timing belt, tensioner, idler, adjuster, and water pump. I'll be using the same kit and also changing the thermostat and radiator hoses, but those are optional. Accesory belt shoukd also be done, but if you're doing your own plugs, I'm sure you can replace that on your own as well. This kit is all you'll really need.

^^
I actually bought an OEM drive belt and tensioner, so I can't comment on that kit. The OEM tensioner is pretty steep; around $150 I think I paid.
