Totally normal. That's the VSA unit and it's normally open.

Do you mean that 2 inch diameter plate inside the Throttle Body? That controls air inlet
and should be sprayed with carb cleaner or TB cleaner

What was the car doing before the noise- did you/anyone do any work on it?
what year and miles?
What kind of fuel economy. less than 20mpg in town?
Have you changed the spark plugs, air filter recently?

it stays open when the cars on or off and i think it closes when it feels that your front tires are spinning. check if u have your intake resonator in (the part that is in the bumper, under the filter, that will cause a hmmmm.

Right. I understand that, but what sensors is the computer relying on? Just wheel speed or also the power steering sensor in the tranny? Just trying to run down the possibilities for my idle problem.

yes the plate that opens & closes! the car was fine nothing/ no mechanical ( no tranny issues either, still on original tranny)issues, its a 2003 tl type s with 93000 miles i use premium only, yes my gas milelage is kinda bad, i changed the plugs & filter after i first noticed it when the check engine light came on, but it still does the humming, & it stays open! my question is does it stay open like that?

YES stays open all the time unless u spin your tires and then it closes. my gas mileage sucks too. really badly, around 210-230 to a tank. (but i have a heavy foot)

Yes, it only closes when the ECU indicates it needs to reduce power to the wheels.

Go back and check the filter. Stick your head under the hood and listen for where the humming is coming from.

idle problem? i would check & replace plugs, make sure you are using same grade fuel( if you use premium stay with it ect !) and check ur coils, most of the time itz misfiring in ur engine! in one of the valves!

dont really know, but if it is , is it a problem that is detrimental? i was planning on replacing the headers anyway with the comptech! not anytime soon though!
but headers seem to be fine to my mechincal standards, maybe bad gaskets?

Header bolts might just need to be retightened. Or you have a bad weld that is causing air leakage.
