Is there a way to tell if they are bad by looking at them without removing them? I've been thinking mine are going bad but I don't want to replace them if they are fine.

I just got mine replaced (front, passengerside) after 100k miles. I also ended up getting vibrations afterwards and found that the front transmission mount was also broken.

Can you tell me if you had the dealer replace them and if so - how much did they charge you?

I think I will start a new thread about Motor Mounts. I took my car in for a oil change at the dealer and was told ALL my motor mounts were broken. I think he said one of them is a transmission hook?

They want to charge me $1,175 to fix. I wonder if any dealer/mechanic can put these on or if its recommended ONLY an Acura Dealer fix it.

If you can give me any help - I'd appreciate it.

Honestly tell them to Go Fly a Kite. 1175 to replace a few motor mounts? You could buy them all for a little over 200 bucks new. and install shouldnt take more than a hr and a half or 2 for any shop or a DIYer

With the hood open, stand beside the car while a very trusted friend puts it in D and R with foot on brake, and give it some gas.
If the engine moves like, an inch or more- you have a bad mount!

VERY common part failure on the TL
Usually discovered when getting transmission replaced

Dealer can tell you how the made diagnosis

Good Luck

Symptoms

I actually didn't realize I had 4 motor mounts out! I took it in for an oil change, bear in mind my 2000 Acura TL has 191,000 miles. Guess I have been lucky since nothing major has happened besides changing the timing belt and water pump.

But the dealer told me I had 4 motor mounts out. 3 were for the motor - 1 for the transmission. I did notice I was getting vibration sounds but thought it was just all the things in my console - arm rest. Sometimes when I was driving it would make noise so I would open the console and move the stuff around and the sound would go away - since any metal objects in my console were not hitting each other. Then I noticed when I wouold turn it was rough on the turns. I have to go through this winding road and noticed it was not smooth like it should be - guess I could feel the motor moving and didn't realize what it was. Finally, I have noticed that when I was backing up it would jolt a little and go back kind of fast if I put my foot on the accelerator. So - I just started to put my car in reverse and let it idle back on it's own. Now looking back - I guess it was my motor raising up and kicking back because of the accelerator.

Since my car is no longer under warranty its very expensive to fix. I was quoted the following from the Dealer.

4 motor mounts - $1,175.00
Front brakes - $270.00
Rear brakes/turn rotors - $250.00 (have 20% of the shoes and don't know why they have to be turned??)
Recommended I change timing belt/water pump again - $960.00
I have a leak on the Power Steering Pump - didn't give me a price but said I could either have them "seal" the pump or replace it. What do you recommend?

I guess for a car with 191,000 miles and this is what has ever been wrong with it I am lucky. I hear a lot about the motor mounts going out. Another mechanic I spoke to said he always see the front and right passenger motor mount going out. I am sure it causes a lot of vibation - check it out.

Also, I called another Honda service garage. Here is their cost for the same work.
5 motor mounts - $610.00 - 332.00 parts and 260 for labor. NOT BAD! They said I have 5 mortor mounts - 3 for the motor and 2 for the transmission.
Front and Rear brakes - $130 each - very reasonable!
timing belt/water pump and O/D belt - $600.00

Now you know who I will be going to - the Dealer is ridiculious in their prices. I can use them only for my oil change!

Forgot something else

If I was a mechanic I would do it myself. But I will never let the Dealer do it since I no longer have the warranty and its not free any more.

I do have 4 mounts out and not all 5 but I will abe replacing all of them since I might have another problem if that 5th one goes out. Here are the prices I was quoted for the mounts - I am not sure which ones exactly but there are are the prices.

1st mount - $110.13
2nd - 124.17
3rd - 51.92
4th - 33.32
5th - 13.30

Do you think $260.00 is fair for the labor? Its $332.64 plus tax and $260.00 labor - $620.30. Is that a good price to have all 5 changed?

The dealer just quoted me $310 to change mine, they say it's bad...of course, I'm not paying $310 for it.

Is #34 the front mount? or is it #6?

mounts

When I called another garage - who will be doing my work - I spoke with the mechanic and he said that if all three motor mounts are out then they should be replaced but said it was not that critical since I do it today. He said as long as there is not major rattling - which I don't have - just found out because of the dealer. When I put my drink down I see some vibration but it doesn't feel bad and I don't hear anything. He said the dealer was just trying to scare me into getting them done there and fast. He said not to worry because the only time it really lifts is when I start and back up. He said the weight of the motor is sitting where it wont mess up the transmission but they just like to scare women because they know they can. I will be getting them done in a few weeks.

Put your car in reverse and back out of the driveway. Give it a little extra gas and then let it off.. Do it several times.. If you feel like it's knocking a bit, it probably is. If you can prop the hood open with a board you can get a friend to watch the engine move. Make sure the hood can't fall in the driveway.. Putting back into drive and moving back and forth may reveal this.

I would highly recommend buying all of the mounts from a dealer. Aftermarket mounts are not a good from a quality stand point. You may pay a little more but it will be well worth it.

Wherever you get them I suggest replacing them yourself, not hard and you only need basic tools. I got a motor mount kit with 3 motor and 2 transmission mount for about 60 bucks
