Shifter won't shift into gear
Shifter won't shift into gear
The shifter won't shift into gear until I pump the brakes several times. Has anyone had this issue. I called the dealer and the guy said it could be the brake lights switch that sits on the break pedal... Any ideas?
Thanks!

cause i think mine is going and i wanted to know how to and how much is the part.
if my stealership says its not the part they fixed like they said about the SRS problem i had!
The part # is 36750-S84003 and it runs around $35. I changed it myself it is really easy 5-10 mins.
By the way, I had this happen to me once about 2 months ago and then it ran fine until it finally started to happen every single time I would start my car... so if it's happened to you once go ahead and replace it before it goes out on you for good.

Follow-up to this problem's solution ...
This is an old thread, but I found it in the archive when looking for the solution of why my car's shifter wouldn't come out of park.
As a follow-up for those having the same problem, I installed a new brake light switch and the problem didn't go away.
I then saw a thread in the Acura Legend forums that said the horn + brake lights + shifter are on the same fuse. I figured that my '03 TL-S may be the same. Well, the fuse layout in the owner's manual is subpar, but after looking around, I found the fuse. It's the STOP 20A fuse under the hood (next to the Horn relay). I replaced this fuse and it fixed the problem.
If anyone is interested, I now have a new Brake Light Switch for sale
Also, the guy at the dealership said sometimes the plastic pad that the brake light switch contacts can crack and fall off (so the switch is "on" constantly). So if your problem is reverse (your brake lights are always on), replacing the $1.95 plastic pad may just be the answer.
Hope this helps!

Hi, I just found this old thread. I know this is a TL site, but my Integra won't shift out of gear (and I didn't find anyone who's done this elsewhere). If the problem is the brake pedal switch, then I need this part: 36750-sr3-003 apparently. However its difficulte to loosen the lock nut on the switch because there isn't much swing room for a wrench. If someone has done this here, and they were able to remove their switch easily, I'd really like to hear how they did it.
This forum saved me some $$$, my 02 TL wouldn't shift so I used the manual shift lock release today to get around town. I called the dealership and they said check the brake lights, which didn't work! So they said to bring it in so they could put on a new switch. They were going to charge me $120 so i was about to just order the part myself for $35 when I read this forum about the fuse problem. Sure enough, I checked my horn and it didn't work either! Replaced the STOP 20A fuse and it fixed the problem instantly!!
I have a 2000 TL with 95000 (second tranny in case your wondering)
I had this problem about 3 months ago and the dealership replaced the brake switch part. But yesterday it started up again. Now I have no brake lights when I put pressure on the peddle but they do work when I "unlock" from the key pad??? I just checked the horn it works fine. Do you think the switch could have gone bad already? I might have to bring it back to them. Also, my SRS has been on for about month - is there a recall for that?
Thanks in advance.

crawl under dash, look at brake pedal- remove wire connector at switch- remove nut holding switch in place
Install new switch and nut-replace wire
check adjustment for when the brake lights come on- so if you tap the pedal you get brake lights

Update: I didn't have a lot of time to install last night (my wife took me out for my brithday - great steaks). Anyway, I did quickly plug in the new brake light switch and the lights instantly worked again. However, I did have the hardest time getting the old brake light switch out ... that damn thing is on really tight! Which nut should i be trying to loosen? The one closest to the firewall looks like it is part of the bracket... am i right on this. Any help is appreciated..
PS: I am stopping by the dealer on Friday to get the SRS looked at... i'll let you all know what that was when i find out. Service manager thinks it might be a seat belt sensor. Guess we'll see.
