Torn CV Boot.

Hey guys I found out yesterday that my passenger CV boot is torn. I dont have money to get a new axle and I was wondering how long I could drive on this? Second question is, if anyone has changed their CV boot before where is a cheaper place to get the part because the dealership is overpriced as you guys probably know. Last is what causes the CV boot to rip?

id bring it to a shop that can inspect the axle for damage and clean it out and repack with grease.

I wouldve originally done that but my friend told me that its not worth it getting the CV boot fixed and to just replace the whole axle.

The cost of a new axle is not much more than repairing the boot; it is better off replacing it for 2 reasons: 1. the old axle is an old, 2. it could be damaged with contaminant once boot is ripped. Unless you want to fix it yourself with the quickfix boot that does not require axle removal.

waste 20 bucks on the fix it kit or buy a complete new axle from NAPA for 75$ and do the job right once---hmmmm what to do? what to do????

Or just drive it till all the grease comes out and dirt gets in- then it will stop turning and you will know for sure it was a problem!

A private shop is normally the way to go on jobs above your tools/skill level

It does suck having to replace the boot, but very fun repacking the bearing with grease.

If the boot just recently tore, you don't have to replace the axle. However, if the leaking grease appears very gritty, time to get the CV joint inspected.

The CV boot is made out of rubber which has a lifespan. That lifespan decreases with constant heat, grease, dirt, and expansion. Avoid parking with the steering wheel turned to any side which causes one side of the boot to stretch and stress itself.

Good tip on parking!

In many cases a boot gets snagged by road debris and a small tear occurs, with hot grease inside a rotating object---- hmmm wonder whats going to happen next?????
I would not expect the average person to repack a bearing- just buy an axle for $75 new at NAPA

Another reason to change your own oil and look everything over/under on your car
