Shifter Cable Adjustment, can't seem to get the dash light to stay in [R]

ok so i got my 2000 tl 3 months ago with a bad trans, (big surprise right??) i replaced it with an 05 honda odyssey trans and it works great except for when i change gears ( park to reverse or park to drive or any change). When it is in park the red light for park will illuminate on the dash, when i go for drive it will change into drive fine but the light will just blink for a moment as i pass into the gear and not remain on when it is in gear. it does this for every gear and have serious doubt that the sport shift option is even working. so i got a copy of alldata and began the shifter cable adjustment procedure naturally believing it would solve the problem. Well the 5th step when the shift cable is unbolted from the gear selector/shift lever is to push the cable in and then pull it out one click to make sure it is in reverse by turning the key to the on position but i cant get it to that. I can push it all the way in to park and the light on the dash says park, when i pull it back one the green light for reverse will flash instead of remaining on when it is in park. What could be going on?? oh jeez i hope some of this craziness makes sense to someone reading ....

When i first got the replacement trans (the odyssey) it didnt come with shifter cable bracket, you know on the bottom that holds the cable with two bolts and the trans with 3, so i used the bracket from the tl's original trans (or which ever one happened to be in there), until i got the correct odyssey one from the dealer for $30 or so, could i have damaged the shifter cable on the transmission side?

where does the car actually figure out what gear it is in to tell the lights on the dash?
