Putting my Acura in Storage
Putting my Acura in Storage
Hey guys so I leave mid August back to College and want to put my Acura in my grandmas garage for approximently 3 months until I get back, wondering what I have to do. I am NOT mechanically inclinded and am wondering if its a bad idea to just leave it as is, maybe with no gas and I know ill have to jump and charge the battery when I get back. I can leave it with my father but he would drive it once every couple weeks to move it but it will get killed outside with the paint and parked on the street which I dont want. Thanks
If I ever store a car I would:
1.- Jack 4 Wheels Up
2.- Remove wheels (So it stands on Rotors Only)
3.- Remove Anti-freeze
4.- Empty Gas Tank
5.- Remove Battery and leave it on a Trickle Charger
6.- Cover the Car completely
7.- Forget it exists until next Summer.
Sooo Hope that helps you out.

Hey Spoiler900, our TL's don't like to be left sitting for extended periods of time as they age.
It appears as though this will only be for a few months. For the rather short time before ya get back.....Ya may wanna use Granny's garage and have your father take your Granny out for groceries or some ice cream about once a week using your TL and keeping it loosened up.
But, if ya decide to store it for the entire winter and not driving it until college is out....then use Skirmich's recommendation. You'll probably start to miss the car and wanna drive it, IMO.

Why would you remove the Anti-Freeze? There is no need for that for 3 months and would probably do more harm than good
. I wouldnt empty the fuel tank either. I would add stabl for the gas. I would leave teh battery connected if you are going to have it on a trickle charger.
^ I think Skirmich was kidding. All of that sounds like a terrible idea and there's no need to store a car for 3 months unless you live in the North Pole.

Why would you jack it up, take the tires off and let it stand on the rotors? Why not just leave it on jack stands with the wheels on.

I would not do anything special since I never have the need to store a car.. since I just have 1 for myself (TL-S) and my wife drives the Bimmer
IMO 3 months isn't that long. I would fill the tank and find a friend to run it for 15 min or drive it every week or two. That's mostly to charge the battery. Or you could buy a trickle charger to save the battery from discharging. I have a friend that leaves his car for 6 months at a time and just hooks up a trickle charger. Once a car battery goes flat or close to it, it's lifetime is reduced.
The full tank is to reduce condensation in the fuel - but that may be old school these days with the sealed fuel systems. And plastic fuel tanks (no rust to worry about).
Hmmmm.
Thinking about it - I'd park the car and jump it when I returned and drive off. Maybe I'd lose $15 of battery life. And the memory on my radio if the battery went flat.
