hows the air filter, clogged?. try seafoaming the car, gas tank, intake, and oil to clean the injectors and cat. manually clean the egr port which gets clogged of over time. their is a diy for all of the things i mentioned.

i dont wanna seafoam the car because i read the diy for it and if you dont do it right it will mess up your engine badly. but to pay someone its real spendy, i did pour in some fuel injector cleaner and it helped a little.

I had same problem on my 99TL, it happened intermittently and only after warm up. Car would start, but as soon as I released key, car would die. Sometimes all lights on dash would turn off as well. After several attempts, car would finally start. Problem was the ignition switch was intermittent. Replaced switch ($70) and no more problems.

From the sounds of it you're probably looking at a fuel issue. How many miles do you have on your 2000 and have you ever replaced the fuel filter/pump??

As previously mentioned.....clean the "egr" ports ! If they are restricted, the engine can't breath and causes runability issues. Another thing to check would be the fuel pump relay.

search the diy for egr cleaning, u have to take off the intake manifold to get to it, its inside the intake manifold.

breathe?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is used to recirculate exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber to help burn atomized fuel and keep the combustion temperature down, therefore preventing NOX which is caused by heat and pressure.

The "EGR" is an emissions device, if restricted or stuck closed your engine would operate under normal conditions with a loss in fuel economy. If it were to fail in the open position you would definitely have a rough idle and lack of power.

That "knocking" noise you're hearing is probably the fuel pump located under the driver side rear of the vehicle. If you have a significant amount of mileage and have yet to replace the fuel filter I highly recommend replacing the filter and pump.
