Odd problem with my friend's TL

My friend has been telling me his TL's A/C is acting very strange.

He says when he flips the dial from 18 to 32 he an actually hear the gates changing and sometimes the odd click of some sort or some sort of hesitation when it's changing over.

HE said also that hte air conditioning does not work. As in the air blows but it's NEVER Cold, he says it's just the outside air coming in and it's brutal. THe dealership tried refilling the freon but that did NOT Do it. I am wondering what the problem is and why he can't get cold air?

IS there a fix for it? If it isn"t the freon what is it? HE said that they said it's the A/C Condensor. Is that true ? Just curious because the air's blowign and the freon is there it's just not cold.

Any advice would be appreciated because he could sure use it in ALberta summer.
THanks

If the dealer tried filling it and it didnt work, why didnt they look into why it wasnt working?

Do you hear the compressor kicking in when you turn the AC on?

They tried charging him one thousand for parts and install for a condensor or compressor or something. It was one of the 2. I Forgot which. It hasn't been working since he got into an accident and I Don't know what the part was all I know is it began with a C and it cost like 1300 with install.

That story sounds very familar. I was in an accident a couple of months ago and after a month in the body shop I get my car back and the A/C is broken. It will kick in for a few seconds (and is really loud) and will be cold for a few seconds, then a few munites off and a shot (2 second burst). The dealer told be that the compessor must me shot and to replace it. Of course, Allstate will not pay for the replacement as there is not any visiul signs that it was caused by the accident. As I am in Socal I have been just living without the A/C until I can have it looked at y someone else. Let me know if you learn anything else and I will let you know when I get my second opinion.

That sounds about right. I guess they tend to ignore it when it happens. And here's a funny part, the insurance won't cover it for him EITHEr!

Im talking the AC compressor, not the fan speed. IF the AC compressor is working right you would hear the compressor (attached to your motor) cycling on and off. Do you hear that? If not is say the problem could very well be the compressor

Yea, just when you cut the ac on does the noise level under the hood get louder, stays the same, or does it cycles loud and normal??? Remember the noise from under the hood.

My compressor cycles between off and off blowing short bursts of cold air. It seems to work well when the car is first started in park, but once you shift to drive it starts up again. Definately can hear the compressor come on and off and can tell the difference in rpm's when it kicks in. Any ideas?

For those that are in the LA area, I know of an a/c shop in Monterey Park that specialize in a/c service/repair. These guys have been in business for a long time. They even make their own hoses. I brought my dad's nissan quest Around July 4th and he found leaks just by touching the a/c lines. Working great since.

I had the same problem you were talking about... when i switch modes (i.e. from regular to feet or to defrost (windshield)) it makes a very loud knocking sound. i guess this comes from the a/c switching the vent to direct the air to different places.. not having any other problems with it.. it stays cold all the time.. under the hood when the a/c is on i can hear a kind of knocking i guess from a fan or something that only makes that noise when a/c is on. is a fan hitting something or is this normal? ive never really noticed it before until a few months ago and have had the car for years.
