Odd Climate Control Issue - 02 TL

So I have read some of the other postings about climate control problems but I am not sure if what I am seeing is similar to what I have read about. I do plan to do the self-test to get the code as posted in an earlier thread - haven't done it yet though.

So what is occurring is when the climate control is on AUTO, and it's cold outside, the heat is not blowing through the vents very fast. It's barely coming out at all as if the fan is not running (or running very slow) and it doesn't matter how you adjust the temp control - still very little heat. But if you take it out of auto and use the manual fan speed, you can adjust the fan quite nicely to blow out the vents.

I don't really understand AUTO vs manual mode that well (i.e. how they work mechanically behind the scenes) but it appears that something is malfunctioning. I just don't know if it's a sensor of some kind - or the blower control, mix motor, etc. What might make it behave this way? Thanks.

Any ideas?

have you looked at the cabin fan and filters- clogged, or possibly the connection for power- that's a problem area

I have not checked the owner manual. I will do that. The cabin filter is replaced regularly but I will check it again. Thanks.

our auto temp mode is a bit tricky including a dead spot between 69-72 degree setting

ck nothing is blocking the sensor opening on top center of dash and the other by driver knee

cabin filters are installed with flow arrow pointed towards driver?

owner operating book has many handy tips on temp and seat heat controls

OK thanks. I used some compressed air and blew out the sensor by the driver knee. However, the one you mention at the top center of the dash has me confused. I see a brown plug at the point where the defogger vents are (but dead center) - this is almost where the dash comes up to the windshield. But I don't really see how that could be a sensor as it's just a cap or plug - with no venting. Is that what you are referring to or am I missing something? If that's the correct piece - my cap seems to be loose - just sort of resting in the cutout.

Also, I am 99 percent sure the cabin filter is correctly oriented because I did it myself - but will check to be sure. Thanks.

Ok - I read the manual now and I see what you are talking about. The cap I am referring to above is the sunlight sensor and the other by my knee is the temp sensor. So the cap on my sunlight sensor is very loose. I don't guess that would disable it from working though. Should I attempt to "glue" it back in place as its very loose and doesn't seem to snap in back in the hole ... could this be the problem?

no- that's just a trim piece, you can remove if desired- mine is in the glovebox~

the 2 sensors work together to establish a constant interior temp

Ok - so I ran the self-diagnostic test twice (using advice found in another post) and it came up with no codes. So I guess I don't have a mechanical problem. It does seem to be running a bit better now after cleaning the sensor areas. Also, I think perhaps the car interior was just too warm at the time I was seeing the problem - and that's why AUTO mode would not crank up the fan, but manual (semi-auto) mode would. Thanks again.
