starter could be the cause. If you can, have someone turn the key while you bang on the starter with a prybar or something. If its binding it will usually free it up enough to get the car started.

Try that then. If you can get your car to Autozone or any chain auto parts store, they will test it for you for free.

can be alternator or fuel pump. car would still try to turn over if the fuel pump didnt work.

power and ground to and from the starter are all connected?

When my car did that the battery was dead. Same symptoms: no crank but all the electronics worked. If you try to jump it off you have to have some large gauge jumper cables or they will not work.

There is no diagram needed. Find the starter towards the front of the motor on the trans side. Remove the wires going to it, remove the 2 bolts. Its easy to replace.

How can you leave the fog lights on?? Doesn't the car switch your lights off after a few min. if you leave them on? Something doesn't sound right.

hes got an 00. no fog lights. he put some in and i think just wired it to a switch and the battery. so if teh switch is on teh lights are on regardless if the cars on or off

May be the starter...may be the ignition switch. Might want to test the old starter before installing a new one. I had a similar problem on an Infiniti, changed the starter, only to have the problem re-occur. For whatever reason, the problem happened more when the car was warm and I tried to re-crank after making a quick stop somewhere. Turned out to be the ignition switch...may have been the problem all along. Pretty easy to change the switch.

I have the exact same problem. my 2000 TL wouldn't crank over yesterday afternoon. I had a 16 mile trip then parked in garage for 2 hours.
It had no response and no noise. after 5 minutes of trying to turn the key, it made a weird noise like as if I was trying to start when engine is already running.
After letting it sit for another 5 minutes, it started fine.

This morning, upon first try, it had no response. On the second try, it cranked over.

what do you think? is it bad starter or bad ignition switch?

Hard to say...could be either. Really need to hot wire the starter and test to be sure.

It's been good since Sunday afternoon's incident, then it happened again this morning.
Car started after 5 attempts. If it's bad starter, shouldn't it just fail completely?

No, it's pretty common for them to be intermittent before they give out completely. Fix it asap or it's gonna strand you.

My issue is resolved.
Thanks to fsttyms1 and TLer trash for correct diagnosis.

I went to O'reily's and picked up a starter for $119.99 + core charge. The guy working at the store ran a quick check and said the starter has a flat spot.

It took me about 1 hour to replace the starter.

I mostly followed the steps mentioned above. I did had to do little more steps to use my limited collection of tools.

I had to remove the battery and battery tray to give me more space.
I used ratchet, socket extender, 8mm, 12mm, 17mm sockets, ratchet handle extender.

For bolt C (17mm) in the picture above, I recommand removing the bottom bolt first.
There was a bracket mounted on one of the casing bolt (8mm). I removed it when taking the bad unit out to give me more room, but this can be done after wards.

Rest of the steps are pretty easy and my car is cranking over without any issues. YEAH!

Thanks again.
