Question Maintenance Required Light Started Flashing

got my 1999 tl at 80000 miles. everything was fine and dandy mechanically. then at 84500 miles the maint. req. light started flashing slowly for about 6 or 7 times when i started my car up. it does go away tho. thought it might be oil, nope, still clear and up to level. brought it into a shop, had 2 mechanics looked at it.

one of them also drives a 2nd gen tl. finally they said it's telling me to reset something, i didnt quite catch it. he said ur suppose to reset something or some shit whenever you change the oil. i havent seen that with any car ever, so i thought it was kinda strange. theyre family so i didnt think they'd steer me wrong. so what the guy did was got in the car, hold down the odometer reset button, shifted it into D4 for about 10 seconds, then back into park. he said it should be fine.

i started the car up, the light flashes again and goes away. now i know technically if it's not on there's nothing wrong. but it wasnt on at all before, so i wanna know if i should be worried.

On my 2nd gen it's counting down to going solid which is when you need to get service. I believe it's only miles driven and nothing else.

Yes, it's just a counter and it will go from flashing to solid when you reach 7,500 miles since the last time it was reset. It's just a reminder for an oil and filter change.

There's no need to shift gears to reset the counter.

The actual steps are in the owners manual and they're posted in a number of threads.

you dont shift it to any gear. just push and hold the trip and reset buttons in, then while holding them in turn the key to the run position. Continue holding them till the Maint req lite goes off (about 10 seconds) You are supposed to reset it at every oil change. Its the reminder to change your oil when it goes on solid. It will flash on start up when its getting close

Next time

There is a Search function in 2 places on this page that will search only the forum. It works, and would have given you many more results, page fulls.

And NO. To the run position, Not Start the car. The run position is where the key goes to when you let off from cranking it over/starting
