Loud idle- please help quick
I just noticed a new loud noise coming from the engine when I parked. I have figured out the noise does not occur when the car is moving forward. But if it is at a stop / in reverse/ or idling in park a constant roar comes about.
While the car was in park, I notice the sound coming from left of the engine, around where the belts are. I checked the oil, appears to be okay.
Any help is extremely appreciated. Need a way to get to and from work.

Try to explain a little more bit the sound... Is it Constant "Hummm", or "Sizzzzzzz"... Left from the Engine? A Wild Guess would be the Power Steering Pump...

I guess it is the normal engine sound, but the loudness is doubled. Not a rattling or hissing sound. Noise goes back to the normal low engine sound when the car starts moving forward. Reverse, stopped, parked- starts up immediately.
Thanks

ac belt tensioner,,behind the alternator,,ck it for grinding noise in the main bearing/base area
ck its motion/action when you rev in park
min went bad at 85kmiles,,
next option water pump failing --ck coolant level in rad and res

You need to be a little more descriptive. A normal engine sound but louder by double? Can you take a little video of said noise?

Thank you for the responses.
Thank you for the response. It is not that. I have my resonator removed, mid muffle delete, magnaflow muffler, and aem v2 CAI. I know the usual hum. This is different.
Great idea.
I don't know if you can make it out, but it is not the 'tic tic tic' (normal, belts running I guess), it is the load growl. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks in advance

without cking vids--a growl is what mine did when the ac belt tensioner was on its last miles
take a long screwdriver and place tip on non-moving base of that belt tensioner
listen to top end of screwdriver like a stethascope
or spend 4 bucks at harbor freight or 10 bucks anywhere,,for a mechanics stethascope
pinpoint noises quickly with the right tool

Is it safe to temporarly drive?
I am not familar with the belt tensioner. Is it right in plain view, left of the engine? I did a search on the forums and google.
Just a hold a screwdriver up to it and listen?
If that is it, do you know the price to replace?
Is this it?
Thanks

It could be anything: power steering pump bearings, alternator bearings, serpentine belt tensioner, or any of the pulleys rolling with the timing belt.
A stethoscope will help. Also, take off the timing belt covers....do you notice the noise is louder? If so, you just isolated it in that area.
Remove the serpentine belt. Does the noise go away?

Did they also replace the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, tensioner and water pump with your belt? 5 items need to be replaced in a timing belt service.
Personally, I would only drive the car if I was able to rule out the noise coming from behind the timing belt covers.

Noises.......
No !!!!!!
Hey Nollid, yes it matters that the T-belt was done and your last pic clearly shows the problem as being a very badly worn accessory drive belt which needs to be replaced immediately at your first opportunity. It's easy because it's on the outside. If you look again, you'll notice that only 1/2 of the belt is existant.....this could cut loose at any time and wrap around some other stuff. If you can't get it tonight, just cut it off ! Buy a new belt and tensioner and you should be good to go, if you trust whoever did your T-belt service ?????

Ha! I didn't even look at that pic. That's gotta be your noise problem right there....the belt. Listen to what 3.2TLc said ^^^^

Yeah, that was easy....but I would be concerned more about the overall quality of the T-belt service recently performed. Makes ya begin to wonder, hey what may be next.... huh ?????

wait are you guys all referring to the picture or the video?
The picture is a google image I found online when trying to find where the ac tensioner is.
Thanks

LOL.
I suggest you start your diagnosis one belt a time as indicated in my previous post to you. Also, take off the timing belt cover and see if the noise gets louder. If you are not willing to do this basic diagnosis yourself, then you're gonna have to pay $$ to do it....and perhaps get suckered into changing your timing belt where only an accessory belt or ac tensioner is required.

LOL.
^^^^agree with Victus1. Start with the basics and attempt to isolate the noise !
By the way, the idler is at the bottom middle of the pic....below the AC pulley. (front belt)

please note when you post pics that are NOT of your car!!!
its easy for a tech not familiar with the TL to over tighten the power steering belt!!
that will fry the pump in short order
see specs for correct freeplay--that belt has a solid adjuster
the ac belt tensioner moves constantly to keep the belt in a certain range of tension
try youtube for `using screwdriver as mechanics stethoscope' for help with that part
all new problems should be investigated as `defect from last work done`
bad part, new part not installed correctly
belt freeplay not on spec.????
especially after a 105 service, where many small parts were moved or removed,,
even the oil dipstick tube needs to be ckd for leak at its oring seal

I had a mechanic look at it and he believes my alternator is going. When the headlights come on the sound intensifies, so it makes sense. I suppose when the vehicle is moving, there is some reason why the noise dies?

It's very easy to see if it's the alternator. Get a 14mm wrench and move the tensioner so you can remove the ac belt. There should be no noise when you start the car. Although, it may also be the tensioner. Put a pipe on the tensioner and then on the alternator and listen where the noise is coming from.

See if your power steering reservoir is foaming up or not. As 01tl4tl mentioned, and as many forum posts indicate (myself included), a power steering pump easily gets victimized from an overtightened belt during timing belt changes.
