Ignition Starter Switch
Ignition Starter Switch
Recently my girl’s 99 TL was doing some weird stuff (stalling out mostly at lights, or coming to a stop) causing the dash lights (Tcs/abs) to come up, and suddenly the engine firing back up while driving, weird stuff. I personally thought I just had some regular winterized gas in the car was making it act rough. But... So earlier this week she was driving the kid to the dentist and all the sudden smoke is coming up from the steering column area, she pulled over luckily and killed the engine. She let it sit for a few and called some help in to keep the kid safe and havea friend drive the TL back to the house. I did a quick search on acurazine and found the recall (ignition starter switch), I ended up doing the repair myself, I don’t have time or patience to let Acura work on it ($55.99 for a part I found at oreillys), and I found out that this part was swapped a few years back at a local shop (she paid $300, ouch), so this is the second time replacing this part(the black cover wasn’t even there). Who knows where this shop found the part, it could have been a pull, the solder on the new part was so heavy compared to the old. The inside of the switch on one of the solder points showed signs of melting plastic, it was pretty scary knowing that this part is so faulty. I’m not sure if this topic has been spoken about recently but I think everyone that might smell plastic burning or see visual smoke or is experiencing weird driving issues (stalling, it was hard to start sometimes too), should be visiting this recall/fix. This was a problem that got worse over time, like a ticking time bomb...I want to thank the acurazine community for the information that led me to the solution which saved my ass big time this week, and possibly saved the car burning to the ground, or seriously hurting my family.
