Help

2000 Acura tl...I am at wits end...changed coils, spark plugs, ERG valves all cleaned and yet still puttering in idol...have had in shop 3 times...no check engine lights on anymore...PLEASE HELP!!! what else could it be?

need more info. Does it drive fine on the throttle? What were your engine codes before?

re
​​​​​​1st time read multiple mis fires including #3 and #6 coils...2nd time read misfire on #3, #5, and #6. this time no check engine light but puttering when, in gear, idoling. when driving, rides smooth...no problems

What exactly, do you mean, " puttering when, in gear, idoling."? It would be very helpful, if you would provide some additional information. "ie" Current mileage, how many miles have you put on it, any other operational issues, any maintenance history, ECU trouble codes in the recent past, etc.. Thank you.

The car has 202000 miles and runs amazing except in last 3 weeks...have always maintained...given to son from original owner, brother in law, at 105000 miles transmission was replaced....about 10 years ago coils changed because of sputtering and check engine light flashed...used premium gas, new tires 2 years ago, tune ups, oil and fluid changes. About 2 years ago check engine light went on; but, was gas cap needing replacement...3 weeks ago car started sputtering and riding rough and son brought right home (6 blocks).shop read multiple misfires...changed spark plugs and coils #3 &#6...they said was fine..brought home...(8 blocks) 1/2 way home started again with engine light flashing again...towed back to shop...now said misfiring of #3, #6 & #5. They checked all coils and changed #5...again brought home and started again after 3 days... towed again and they cleaned ERG in and under manifold? Again drove home and sputtered when idoling AGAIN...I'm not calling them again till I have some idea what could be or if worth fixing. Only sputters when in gear idoling not when in park...rides so smooth...no check engine lights, amazing car but don't know why they keep only relying on diagnostic tool...apparently there is something it is missing..appreciate any advice and help please.

"puttering" -No sound just kind of lightly feels like going to stall...kind of light jerking feeling

Thank you lhowell57, for providing the additional information. I think it odd, that there is a serious engine idle issue, with no check engine light. What you may want to try, is, go to the passenger side front door, open the door, and on the area of the side of the dash, normally covered by the door, you will find a fuse panel. If necessary, you can find instructions, in your owners manual. Carefully remove the fuse panel cover, by GENTLY, prying it away from the dash. Than, locate, and remove the CLOCK fuse. Should be a 7.5 amp fuse. The diagram on the back side of the fuse panel, will tell you which one it is. Leave the fuse out, for at least 60 seconds, than reinstall it. By doing this, you will have just re-set the ECU, or engine control computer. You will than, have to perform the IDLE RELEARN PROCEDURE, which is very simple to do. You can find the necessary steps, for the RELEARN PROCEDURE, by using the search function, on this Forum. See if this process has any affect on the problem. If it does not, please advise.

As a side note: You mentioned, in your post # 6, ("used premium gas"). In the event you have been, or are using premium grade fuel, please understand, premium, IS NOT required, in the 2000 model year TL, and would be a waste of your money. The 2G TL S Type model, was not produced until later, and only the TL S Type, requires premium fuel. Also, IMO, It is WISE, whenever practical, to use only (TOP TIER) rated fuels, not only in Acuras, but in any gasoline powered vehicle.

I disagree -

My '03 TL-P manual specifically calls out premium only.

91+ octane should be used in all Honda high-compression engines.

Thanks Chojun, Your absolutely correct. One of the two active brain cells I have left, must have mis-fired, when i made this statement.
